சிறைநலனும் சீரும் இலரெனினும் மாந்தர்
உறைநிலத்தோடு ஒட்டல் அரிது.

Transliteration:
siRainalanum sIrum ilareninum mAndhar
uRainilaththODu oTTal aridhu
siRainalanum – protective fort
sIrum – glory on their own
ilareninum – even if they are not there (protection and glory)
mAndhar – for enemies
uRainilaththODu – the place where they live and probably have some strength
oTTal – to go and attack and be victorious
aridhu – is difficult.
To attack and win the enemies even if their protective fortress is none and they have no glory of their own, is extremely difficult. This may seem illogical and highly improbable; but the explanation given by Parimelazhagar seems valid and convincing. When there is not much to lose, even an unprotected, weak, small army would fight fiercely not bothering about losing lives. Such aggressiveness could cause havoc to stronger armies. Ample accounts are there in the pages of history for such incidents too!

சிறைநலனும் – காக்கின்ற அரண்
சீரும் – அவர் சிறந்த படை என்னும் பெயர்
இலரெனினும் – இவையாவும் இல்லையென்றாலும்
மாந்தர் – பகைவரை
உறைநிலத்தோடு – அவர்கள் வாழுகின்ற இடந்தனில்
ஒட்டல் – சென்று தாக்கி வெல்லுதல்
அரிது – கடினம்
ஒருவருக்கு அவரைக் காக்கின்ற அரணுள்ள கோட்டையும், அவருகென்று தனித்த பெருமையும் இல்லை என்றாலும், பகைவரை அவர்கள் வாழ்கின்ற இடங்களில் சென்று தாக்குதல் மிகவும் கடினமானது. இது ஒரு பேச்சுக்காக சொன்னது போலிருந்தாலும், பரிமேலழகரின் விளக்கம் நம்பும்படியாக உள்ளது. அரணும், பெருமையும் இல்லாரெனினும், இழப்பதற்கு ஏதுமில்லையாயின் உயிரே போனாலும் போகட்டுமென்று வீரியத்தோடு போராடும் உளப்பாங்கு உருவாகிவிடும். அப்போது அவர்களைத் தாக்கிவெல்லுதல் அரிதாகிவிடும். இதற்கும் சரித்திரப்பக்கங்களில் சான்றுகள் பலவுண்டு.
