காலாழ் களரில் நரியடும் கண்ணஞ்சா
வேலாள் முகத்த களிறு.

Transliteration:
kAlAzh kaLaril nariyaDum kaNNanjA
vElAL mugaththa kaLiRu
kAlAzh – where even elephants legs will sink
kaLaril – in such deep muddy land
nari aDum – even the fox can kill
kaNNanjA – the elephant that does not fear even the mahout
vElAL – the warriors carrying spears
mugaththa – killed them kept them as ornamentation on it tusks
kaLiRu – the elephant
The deep muddy land where even its legs will completely sink, if an elephant, which is fearless even to the controlling mahout and has kept the spear-handed warriors as the ornamentation on its tusks (after killing them), gets into such land, a tiny fox can kill it. This verse once again stresses the importance of choosing the right place of operation.
Though the metaphor is beautiful, it may be wrong to think that a fox may be able to easily operate in muddy terrain. If it is knee deep for an elephant, the fox will definitely sink in such places. When such is the case, how will it kill an elephant? It has to be construed that in a place where trouble is certain, even a weak opponent can win against a strong warrior.

தமிழிலே:
காலாழ் – கால் அழுந்தும் அளவுக்கு ஆழமான
களரில் – சேற்றிலே கால் வைத்தால்
நரி அடும் – பாழாம் நரியும் கொன்றுவிடும் (எதை?)
கண்ணஞ்சா – பாகனுக்கும் அஞ்சாத
வேலாள் – வேலை ஏந்திய வீரகளையும்
முகத்த – தம் தந்தங்களால் குத்திக் கோர்த்த (மணிகளைப் போல்)
களிறு – யானையானது.
கால் புதைந்து போகும் அளவுக்கு உள்ள சேற்றில் கால் வைத்தால், பாகனுக்கும் அஞ்சாத, வேல்வீரர்களை மாலையாகக் தம் தந்தங்களால் குத்திக்கோர்க்கின்ற யானையும், நரிகளால் கொல்லப்படும். இடனறிதல் அதிகாரத்தில் மீண்டுமொரு குறள் வலிமையும் சிறுமைபட்டு சிதையும், இடம் தெரியாமல் செயல்பட்டால் என்பதை வலியுறுத்தி.
கருத்துக்கு அழகு உண்டே தவிர, இக்குறளின் உவமை தவறென்றே படுகிறது. யானைக்கே கால் புதையுமென்றால், நரி புதையுண்டே போகும் அச்சேற்றிலே! அவ்வாறு இருக்க எப்படி யானையை கொல்லுமது? மேற்கோள் சரியற்றதாக இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் தன் வலிமை செல்லாத இடத்தில் அகப்பட்டுக்கொண்டால் ஒரு வீரமிக்கவனும், வீரமற்றவர்களிடம் தோற்றழிந்துபோவான் என்னும் கருத்து மற்றொருமுறை ஆழ்ந்து உணரத்தக்கதே!
