பெருங்கொடையான் பேணான் வெகுளி அவனின்
மருங்குடையார் மாநிலத்து இல்.
(குறள் 526: சுற்றந்தழால் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
perungkuDaiyAn pENAn veguLi avanin
marunguDaiyAr mAnilaththu il
perungkuDaiyAn – one who is benevolent
pENAn veguLi – and does not succumb to anger, rage
avanin – none other than him
marunguDaiyAr – is surrounded by
mAnilaththu il – in this world
This verse expresses the same thought as the previous, except said in a different way. The last verse stressed on being a person of sweet words to kindred. This verse talks about not giving in to anger or rage apart from being benevolent. In general people of sweet words will be devoid of anger and likewise, people devoid of anger will be of sweet words. Why then are there two verses? Sometimes people can pretend to be sweet tongued; but to pretend consistently as a person devoid of anger or rage is extremely impossible. Perhaps because of that vaLLuvar has said about both in two different verses.
The verse says: None other than the benevolent and anger/rage restrained, is surrounded by kindred in this world.

பெருங்கொடையான் – வள்ளன்மை மிக்கானாயும்
பேணான் வெகுளி – சினத்தை போற்றாதானாயும்
அவனின் – அவ்வாறு இருப்பவனைவிட
மருங்குடையார் – சுற்றத்தை தம்பக்கத்தில் கொண்டவர்கள்
மாநிலத்து இல் – இவ்வுலகில் வேறு யாருமில்லை.
சென்ற குறளை வேறு விதமாகச் சொல்லுகிற குறள் இது. இன்சொல் ஆற்றுதலுக்கும், வெகுளி பேணாமைக்கும் வேற்றுமை இல்லை. சினம் இல்லானே இன்சொலனாக இருப்பான். இன்சொல் உடையார்க்கு சினத்தைப் போற்றி காத்தல் இராது. இதற்கு ஏன் இரண்டு குறள்கள் என்று சிந்திக்கவேண்டும். இன்சொலனாக சில நேரங்களில் மனிதர்கள் நடித்துவிடலாம். ஆனால் சினமில்லாமல் மனிதர்களால் வெகு நேரத்திற்கு நடிக்க முடியாது. ஒருவேளை அதற்காக இன்சொல்லைப் பற்றி முதற்குறளில் சொல்லிவிட்டு, பின்பு விளக்குவதற்காக, அதுமட்டுமில்லாமல் “சினமும் இல்லாமல் இருப்பவரை” என்று மேலும் வலிந்து சொல்லுகிறார் வள்ளுவர் என்று கொள்ளலாம்.
பெரிய வள்ளன்மையும், சினமில்லாமையும் கொண்டவனைவிட உலகத்தில் சுற்றத்தால் சூழப்பட்டு இருப்பவர் யாருமில்லை என்பது இக்குறளின் பொருள்.
