வேலன்று வென்றி தருவது மன்னவன்
கோலதூஉங் கோடா தெனின்.
(குறள் 546: செங்கோன்மை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
vElanRu venRi tharuvadu mannavan
kOladUung kODa denin
vElanRu – Weapons that help win enemies or keep citizens under control are not
venRi tharuvadu – the ones that give true victory
mannavan – for the ruler
kOl – his scepter
adUung – that too
kODadenin – when does not bend as the situation demands and is always just.
The real victory for a ruler is not the one over enemies or keeping the citizen under thumb with might of weapons; it is the just rule rendered with unbent scepter that is considered real victory. An interesting usage in this verse is, “adUung” which adds an interesting dramatic element to the verse. “This is given by that, that too if it is like this” is something that we use in normal conversations, that vaLLuvar has aptly used here.
“Scepter, that too unbent and just is the true gear
Of any victory over feared enemies, not the spear”
தமிழிலே:
வேலன்று – பகைவரை கொல்லும், குடிகளை பயத்தில் வைக்கும் ஆயுதம் அல்ல (வாள், வேல்)
வென்றி தருவது – வெற்றியைப் பெற்றுத் தருவது ஆள்வோர்க்கு
மன்னவன் – அரசன் அல்லது ஆள்பவனுடைய
கோல் – செங்கோலே நிலைத்திருக்கும் வெற்றியைத் தருவது.
அதூஉங் – அதுவும் கூட
கோடாதெனின் – அக்கோல் வளயாது நீதியைக் காக்கும் செங்கோலாயின்.
ஆட்சிப் பொறுப்பில் இருப்பவருக்கு வெற்றியென்று சொல்லப்படுவது அவருடைய படைவலியால் அவர் எவ்வாறு பகைவர்களை வீழ்த்தினார், அல்லது குடிகளை தமக்குக் கீழே பயத்துடன் வாழச் செய்தார் என்பதில் இல்லை. அவருக்கு உண்மையான வெற்றியைத் தரக்கூடியது அவரது செங்கோல்தான். அதுவும் வளையாது, நீதியைக் காக்குமாயின். இக்குறளில் ஒரு கவனிக்கத்தக்க சொல், “அதூஉங்” என்பதுதான். பேச்சு வழக்கில் இருப்பது போல், “இதைத் தருவது இதுதான், அதுவும் இப்படி இருக்குமானால்” என்பதில் ஒரு நாடக வசனத்தன்மை இருப்பது இரசிக்கத்தக்கது.
