வெருவந்த செய்தொழுகும் வெங்கோல னாயின்
ஒருவந்தம் ஒல்லைக் கெடும்.
(குறள் 563: வெருவந்த செய்யாமை அதிகாரம்)
வெருவந்த – எல்லோரும் அஞ்சும்படியான (அசுரரைப்போல்)
செய்தொழுகும் – ஆட்சி செய்யும்
வெங்கோலனாயின் – கொடுங்கோல் ஆட்சியாளனாயின்
ஒருவந்தம் – உறுதியாக
ஒல்லைக் – விரைந்து
கெடும் – ஆட்சியில் நிலைத்திருக்காமல் கெடுவான்
இக்குறள் கூறுவதும் “உள்ளங்கை நெல்லிக்கனி”; எல்லோர் உள்ளமும் விழைவதுதான்; சரித்திரப் பக்கங்கள் காட்டும் உண்மைதான். இக்குறளின் சொல்லாடலில், ஒருவந்தம் என்னும் சொல், உறுதிப்பாட்டினை, நிலைத்தன்மையைக் குறிக்கும் சொல், அதை ஆட்சி நிலையாத காரணம்பற்றி கூறியமை அழகு! கருத்து இதுதான்: எல்லோரும் அஞ்சும்படியான ஆட்சியைச் செய்யும் கொடுங்கோலர் நிலைத்திருந்து ஆட்சி புரியார். அவர் விரைந்து, உறுதியாகக் நிலைத்திருக்காமல் அழிவர்.
Transliteration:
Veruvanda seydhozhugum vengkOla nAyin
Oruvandham ollaik keDum
Veruvanda – For everyone to fear his rule
seydhozhugum – rulers that rule the country
vengkOlanAyin – such tyrants
Oruvandham – will definitely
ollaik – sooner
keDum – will become unstable in his power and perish
Another verse with an obviously observable and understandable thought; Almost everybody would desire the same too; There are ample examples in the pages of history for the same too. The word “oruvandam” denotes “certainty” and it is used to denote “uncertainty and instability” of the rulers because of his tyrannic nature. The verse says: “Rulers that rule in manners that others fear (to be under his rule, will not rule for long; they will perish in their power soon with certainty.
“Perish will the tyrant, that rules by fear of everyone
Losing power, with certainty, very soon to be gone”
