அருஞ்செவ்வி இன்னா முகத்தான் பெருஞ்செல்வம்
பேஎய்கண் டன்னது உடைத்து.
(குறள் 565: வெருவந்த செய்யாமை அதிகாரம்)
அருஞ்செவ்வி – தன்னை அணுகி உதவி வேண்டுவோர்க்கு காண்பதற்கு அரியனாக இருப்பவனும்
இன்னா முகத்தான் – எப்போது கடும் முகத்தை கொண்டு, அஞ்சத்தக்கவனாகவும் உள்ளவன்
பெருஞ்செல்வம் – கொண்டுள்ள பெருஞ் செல்வமானது
பேஎய் – பேயானது (பூதம்)
கண்டன்னது – அச்செல்வத்தை கண்டு அதைத்
உடைத்து – தான் கைக்கொண்டு உடைத்திருப்பது போலாம்
தன்னைப் பிறர் காண்பதை கடினமாக்கிக் கொண்டு, தன்னைப் பிறர் காணும்போது, கடும்முகத்தைக் காட்டும் ஆள்வோனது பெரும் செல்வமும், பூதம் காத்தப் புதையலைப் போன்றதே! காண்பதும் அரிது, அதன் முகம் பூதத்தின் முகத்தை முன்னிருத்துவதால் அஞ்சத்தக்கதும் ஆகும்.
இக்குறள் பூதத்தைக் காண்பதில் வரும் அச்சத்தை அது காக்கும் செல்வத்தின் மேலேற்றி, அச்செல்வமே அச்சம் தருவது என்றும், அதை காண்பதற்கு கடினம் என்றும் உணர்த்துகிறது. இதுவும் ஆளுவோர் பிறர் அஞ்சத்தக்கன செய்யக்கூடாது என்பதை உணர்த்தும் குறளாகும்
Transliteration:
Arunjchevvi innA mugaththAn perunjchelvam
pEeykaN dannadhu uDaiththu
Arunjchevvi – making self, rare to be seen for others to approach for help
innA mugaththAn – having unpleasant and fearful face to others (so that they don’t approach him)
perunjchelvam – his wealth
pEey – ghost
kaNdannadhu – finding the wealth to safeguard it
uDaiththu – such is the state of that wealth (unreachable and fearful to reach too)
Making self to rare for subjects to reachout for help, and keeping a fearful face so that they don’t approach him at all is like a ghost preserving the wealth in its custody. The wealth safeguarded by the ghost is difficult to reach, and is also fearful.
Not that the wealth is fearful; because,a ghost is fearful, the wealth itself is fearful. The purpose of this verse is stress that the ruler should not be fearful to his subjects so that they don’t approach him for help.
“Being rare and fearful front for subjects, a rulers wealth
Is like a ghost safeguarding the same, fearful and stealth”
