கடுஞ்சொல்லன் கண்ணிலன் ஆயின் நெடுஞ்செல்வம்
நீடின்றி ஆங்கே கெடும்.
(குறள் 566: வெருவந்த செய்யாமை அதிகாரம்)
கடுஞ்சொல்லன் – பிறர் அஞ்சும்படியாக கடுஞ்சொற்களைக் கூறுவதோடு (ஆளுவோன்)
கண்ணிலன் ஆயின் – கண்ணோட்டம், பிறரிடம் நயப்பில்லாதவனாகவும் இருந்தால்
நெடுஞ்செல்வம் – அவனுக்குத் முன்னோர்கள் வழியே தொடர்ந்து வரும் செல்வமெல்லாம்
நீடின்றி – நீண்டநாள் அவனிடம் தங்கியிராமல்
ஆங்கே கெடும் – அப்போதே தொலைந்து அழியும்
இக்குறள் சென்ற குறளிலிருந்து சற்று மாறுபட்டது. கடுமுகத்தனாக இருப்பதே தவறு; கடுஞ்சொலனாக இருப்பது அதனினும் தவறு. கண்ணோட்டமாகிய அருள் நோக்கில்லாமல் இருப்பதும் தவறு. ஆக இவ்விரண்டும் ஆள்வோரிடம் இருக்குமாயின், அவருக்கு தொன்றுதொட்டு வருகின்ற செல்வம், நீண்ட நாட்கள் நிலைக்காமல், தொலைந்து அழிந்துவிடும். இதுவே இக்குறள் தரும் கருத்து.
கடுஞ்சொல்லும், அருள் நோக்கிலாமையும் அஞ்சத்தக்கனவாம் ஆளப்படுபவர்களுக்கு. அவற்றை ஆளுவோர் தவிர்க்காவிடில் ஏது விளையும் என்பதை இக்குறள் சுட்டுகிறது. இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் மற்ற குறள்களில் சொல்லப்பட்ட கருத்தோடு ஒத்ததுதான் இக்குறளும்.
Transliteration:
kaDunjchollan – being a ruler of fearsome words
kaNNilan Ayin – and also a person unkind to subjects
neDunjchelvam – the wealth passed on to him from ancestors
nIDinRi – without longevity
AngE keDum – will perish rightaway
This verse is slightly different from the previous one. To show a fearful face it self is wrong. To be harsh worded is ever more wrong. Along with that being unkind is definitely wrong. So, if a person is both harsh worded and unkind, all wealth from posterity to present will switftly fade away and be lost permanently – is the thought expressed in this verse.
This verse clearly tells what will happen to rulers that don’t avoid harsh words and and unkind nature towards subjects. Not very different from other verses.
“Ruler of harsh speak and unkind nature will lose it all,
wealth passed on from past without longevity to his fall”
