சிறப்பறிய ஒற்றின்கண் செய்யற்க செய்யின்
புறப்படுத்தான் ஆகும் மறை.
(குறள் 590: ஒற்றாடல் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
siRappaRiya oRRinkaN seyyaRka seyyin
puRappaDuththAn Agum maRai
சிறப்பறிய – செய்த செயலுக்குப் பிறர் அறிய பாராட்ட வேண்டுமெனில்
ஒற்றின்கண் – ஒற்றரிடத்து வெளிப்படையாகச்
செய்யற்க – செய்யாதீர்
செய்யின் – அப்படிச் செய்தால்
புறப்படுத்தான் – வெளிப்படுத்தியது போல
ஆகும் – ஆகுமாம்
மறை – அவருடைய புனை உருவை
இக்குறள் ஒற்றருக்கு உரிய இலக்கணத்தைக் கூறும் போது, உள்ளத்துள்ளதை பிறர் அறியாவண்ணம் ஒளிக்கும் வல்லவராயிருக்க வேண்டியதை வலியுறுத்துகிறார். ஒற்றர்படை என்னும் அதிகாரத் தட்டுத் தளங்களின் உச்சியில் இருக்கும் தலைவனுக்கும் அஃதிருத்தல் தேவை. அவன் ஒரு ஒற்றன் செய்த சிறப்பான சேவையைப் வெளிப்படையாக எல்லோரும் அறியும் வண்ணம் பாராட்டும் போது, தன்னுள்ளத்தில் ஒளித்திருக்கும் அவ்வொற்றனுடைய அடையாளத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தி, மறைவானதை வெளிச்சத்துக்கு கொண்டுவந்து விடுவதால், அது அவ்வொற்றனையும், தலைமையையும் ஒருங்கே பாதிக்கும் செயல். ஒற்றரைப் பாராட்டுவதை தலைவன் ஒளித்தே ஒருவரும் அரியா வண்ணமே செய்யவேண்டும்.
Transliteration:
siRappaRiya oRRinkaN seyyaRka seyyin
puRappaDuththAn Agum maRai
siRappaRiya – For others to know the best service
oRRinkaN – done by a spy, to a spy
seyyaRka – never do any special praise before others or award him with honors
seyyin – if such is done
puRappaDuththAn – revealing the identity of the spy
Agum – it will be
maRai – which has been kept as secret only known to the heigher office of the rank.
This verse serves to speak about an important aspect of a spying organization, which should by design be multi-layered. At each layer, the head of the layer who is only known to the head above and knows the spies that work for him should never praise or award a spy under him openly known to others or public. If it is done so, the very purpose of secrecy is violated and the identity of both the head as well as the spy is revealed to be absolutely useless further on. Not only that, it poses considerable threat to both the head as well as the spy; Hence praise or award must be done in absolute secrecy for spies.
“Praise or award to the worthy spy is never done in public;
That tantamounts to revealing the identity, make them relic.
