60: (Zealous Effort – ஊக்கமுடைமை)
[In this chapter vaLLuvar focuses on tireless effort with zeal and zest, not giving up the undertaken task. Though applicable to everyone, for people involved in ruling and administration, it is even more imperative and important. Parimelazhagar gives an artificial sense of order of this chapter as to why it is kept after spying. He says, knowing what information spies bring, while acting accordingly, one must act with zeal, not slackening, which seems to artificially fit the reason for the order. உடையர் எனப்படுவது ஊக்கம் அஃதில்லார்
உடையது உடையரோ மற்று.
(குறள் 591: ஊக்கமுடைமை அதிகாரம்)
உடையர் – ஒருவரை ஆக்கமும் செல்வமும் உள்ளவர்
எனப்படுவது – எனச் சொல்லச் செய்வது
ஊக்கம் – அவரிடம் உள்ள ஊக்கமுடைமையினால்தான்
அஃதில்லார் – அவ்வூக்கமுடைமையை உள்ளத்தில் கொள்ளார்க்கு
உடையது – இருப்பினும்
உடையரோ – அவை உள்ளவரென்று கொள்ளத்தக்கவரோ
மற்று – மற்ற எல்லா ஆக்கமும்
ஆத்திச் சூடியில் ஔவையார் சொல்வது, “ஊக்கமது கைவிடேல்”. ஊக்கத்தைக் கைக்கொண்டார்க்கும் எவ்வொரு தேக்கமும் இல்லை. அஃதில்லார்க்கு எல்லா ஆக்கமும் இருந்தும் எதுவுமே இல்லாதவராகவே கொள்ளத்தக்கவர். ஒருவரை ஆக்கமும் செல்வமும் உடையவர் எனச் சொல்வது, அவரது ஊக்கமுடைமையை வைத்துதான்.
Transliteration:
uDaiyar enappaDuvadhu Ukkam ahdillAr
uDaiyadhu uDaiyarO maRRu
uDaiyar – A person is know to possess wealth
enappaDuvadhu – is known to so because of
Ukkam – his zeal and effort to do things
ahdillAr – those who don’t have that zeal
uDaiyadhu – even if they have
uDaiyarO – will they be considered to truly wealth
maRRu – all other wealthy
As said by Auvayyar in “Athich chUDi”, One must never give up the relentless zest or zeal to do the undertaken task – “Ukkamadhu kaiviDEl”. Those who are zealous don’t have any stagnation in their deeds. Those who don’t have that, however much other forms of wealth they have are equa to having none. A person is known to be truly wealthy iff they have that unremitting, persistent zeal to pursue the tasks they undertake.

Devoid of that, do they have any, even having all the rest?
