மடிமை குடிமைக்கண் தங்கின்தன் ஒன்னார்க்கு
அடிமை புகுத்தி விடும்.
(குறள் 608: மடியின்மை அதிகாரம்)
மடிமை – சோம்பலானது
குடிமைக்கண் – நற்குடிப் பிறந்தோரிடத்து
தங்கின் – புகுந்து நிலை பெறுமானால்
தன் ஒன்னார்க்கு – அவருடைய பகைவர்க்கு அவரை
அடிமை – அடிமையாக
புகுத்தி விடும் – செலுத்திவிடும்
மற்றுமொரு குறள் சோம்பல் தரும் தீமை பற்றி. நற்குடிப் பிறந்தோராயினும், சோம்பல், தாம் புகுந்தவரை, அவரது பகைவருக்கும் கூட அடிமையாக்கி விடும் என்கிறது இக்குறள். மீண்டுமொருமுறை கடந்த பல அதிகாரங்களும் நாம் அரசியல் சார்ந்தவை என்பதை நினைவில் கொள்ளவேண்டும்.
பகை என்பது, தனி மனிதனுக்கும் உண்டெனினும், அது ஒரு நாட்டை பாதிக்காது. ஆளும் தகைமையோடு பிறந்தவரிடம் சோம்பலானது குடிபுகுமானால், அது அவருடைய நாட்டையே, குடியையே, பகைவரிடம் அடிமைப் படுத்துவதாகி விடும்.
Transliteration:
maDimai kuDimaikkaN thangin than onnArkku
aDimai puguththi viDum
maDimai – slothfulness
kuDimaikkaN – even if born in a great lineage (of rulers)
thangin – if it (sloth) stays with someone(ruler)
than onnArkku – to his enemies
aDimai – subjugate
puguththi viDum – will set them in that (subjugation)
Here is another verse on slothfulness. Even if born from a great lineage, slothfulness, where it sets in, will subjugate the person to his enemies, says this verse. We have to recall the fact we are in the middle of chapters that deal with polity. Many of these chapters that have verses that seem to fit an ordinary citizen as well as the ruler.
Though enemies are there for common men, they do not affect, a state. But a ruler’s enemies are state’s enemies, and cause harm to the state and bring the state to slavery.
“Slothful ruler, however great is the lineage
Will render the state in enemies’ bondage”
