பொறியின்மை யார்க்கும் பழியன்று அறிவறிந்து
ஆள்வினை இன்மை பழி.
(குறள் 618: ஆள்வினையுடைமை அதிகாரம்)
பொறியின்மை – ஒருவருக்கு உறுதுணையாக இன்றி ஊழ்வலி வேறாகுமாயின்
யார்க்கும் – அது யாருக்குமே
பழியன்று – பழிக்கத்தக்கதென்று உலகம் கொள்ளாது
அறிவறிந்து – ஆனால் அறிய வேண்டியவற்றை கற்று அறிந்தும்
ஆள்வினை – ஊக்கமொடு கூடிய முயற்சி
இன்மை – இல்லாமையே
பழி – அவருக்குப் பழியைச் சேர்ப்பதாகும்
ஒருவருக்கு அவர் தளராது காரியமாற்றியும், ஊழ்வலியால் ஒன்றும் நடக்கவில்லையெனினும் அது குற்றமாகாது, அதனால் பழியும் வந்து சேராது. ஆனால் கற்கவேண்டியவற்றை கற்றறிந்தும், ஊக்கமும், தளராத முயற்சியும் அற்றார்க்கு அதனால் பழியும், வருத்தமும், அழிவும்தான் சேரும்.
“அறிவு அற்றங் காக்குங் கருவி” (குறள், 421) என்று ஏற்கனவே பார்த்திருக்கிறோம். ஆனால் இக்குறளில் வள்ளுவர் அறிவு அற்றம் காக்குமானலும், அது தாளாண்மை கொண்டவர்க்கேயென்றும் உணர்த்துகிறார். அக்கருத்தின் அடிப்படையில் இன்றைய குறளில், கற்றறிந்தும் ஊக்கமில்லார்க்கு அற்றமே என்று சிறப்பு ஏகாராத்தைச் சேர்த்துச் சொல்லப்படுகிறது.
Transliteration:
poRiyinmai yArkkum pazhiyanRu aRivaRindu
ALvinai inmai pazhi
poRiyinmai – Not having the supporting fate
yArkkum – all anyone
pazhiyanRu – is not a blame (or will bring blame)
aRivaRindu – but having learned all that has to be learned
ALvinai – persistent effort with zeal
inmai – not having
pazhi – will definitely bring blame, suffering and destruction
Even with all sincere efforts, if the fate has its way and a work does not get accomplished, there is nothing to blame in a person; but if a person has acquired all the knowledge and skills, and still does not have persistent effort in his pursuit, it will bring blame, shame and even destruction.
As already seen in the verse 421 in an earlier chapter, “aRivu aRRam kAkkum karuvi” – that which saves from suffering, destruction. But vaLLuvar implies in this verse, even education, knowledge and skills will protect someone from suffering or destruction, iff combined with persistent effort. Just being in mindscape does not help a person. Today’s alternate verse implies by the word “aRRamE’, with the ending “mE” indicating certainty of suffering, when no industry is shown.
“If fate has its way, not bearing fruit, despite effort it is not blameful
But being learned and knowledgeable, not having effort is shameful”
