கற்றுக்கண் அஞ்சான் செலச்சொல்லிக் காலத்தால்
தக்கது அறிவதாம் தூது.

கற்றுக் – கற்க வேண்டியவற்றை கற்றவனும்
கண் அஞ்சான் – சினந்து பகைவர் பார்க்கும் பார்வைக்கு பயப்படாதவனும்
செலச்சொல்லிக் – வேற்றரசர் உள்ளத்தில் பதியுமாறு தூதுக்கான செய்தியைச் சொல்லி
காலத்தால் தக்கது – நேரத்தை அறிந்து அதற்கு தகுந்தாற்போல்
அறிவதாம் – சமயோசிதமாக நடந்துகொள்ளுவதற்கும் பேசுதற்கும் அறிந்திருப்பவனே
தூது – தூதன் எனப்படுவான்
மீண்டும் தூததனுக்குரிய இலக்கணம், தவணை முறையில் சிறிது சிறிதாக! கற்றறிந்தவன், பகைவர் சினந்து பார்க்கும் பார்வைக்கு அஞ்சாதவன், வேற்றரசிடம் பேசும்போது அவர்களுக்கு உள்ளத்தில் பதியுமாறு செய்தியைச் சொல்லுபவன், நேரத்துக்குத் தக்கவாறு சமயோசிதமாகப் பேசுதற்கும், நடந்துகொள்ளுவதற்கும் அறிந்தவன் என்று எல்லா குண நலங்களையும் உடையவன்தான் தூதன் எனப்படுவான்.
இக்குறளோடு, இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் சென்ற குறள்களும், தூதன் என்பவன் பெற்றிருக்கவேண்டிய கல்வி, அறிவுடமை, பேச்சுத்திறன், பகைக்கஞ்சா நெஞ்சுரம் என்னும் பண்பு நலங்களைப் பற்றியே பேசுகின்றன. குறள் என்னும் அமைப்பிலே பல நேரங்களிலே ஒரு தலைப்பின் ஒரு அங்கத்தைப் பற்றிச் சொல்வதற்கு ஒரு குறளால் முடியாது என்பதால் இத்துணைக் குறள்கள் தேவைப்படுகின்றன. சில நேரங்களில் பாவமைதிக்காக சொன்னதையே சொல்லும் வழு வேறு.
இவ்வதிகாரதில் மட்டுமின்றி பல அதிகாரங்களிலும் இவ்வாறு அமைந்துள்ளதைக் காணலாம். சுயமாக விதித்துக்கொண்ட கட்டமைப்புகளால் ஏற்படும் எழுத்துக்குற்றமே இது. எவ்வாறு கட்டுரையென்னும் அமைப்புக்கு, இவ்வாறு தவணை முறையில் சொல்வது ஏற்புடையது அன்றோ, அதுவே கவிதையெனும் அமைப்புக்கும் பொருந்துவதுதானே! ஆனால் வள்ளுவரைக் குறை கூறுதலும் ஏற்புடையதாக இருக்காதே!
Transliteration:
kaRRukaN anjAn selachchollik kAlaththAl
thakkadu aRivadhAm thUdu
kaRRu – Being a person of erudition
kaN anjAn – never fearful to face angry eyes of enemies
selachchollik – able to deliver the intended message for the opponent to understand
kAlaththAl thakkadu – understanding what is appropriate for the times
aRivadhAm – one who has the ability to speak and act accordingly
thUdu – a person of above traits is known to be an emissary.
Once again, a verse defining, who an emissary is, in installments. Learned, fearless of anger filled eyes of enemies, ability to speak to opponents to make them understand the intentions, repercussions, act appropriately as times demand are the combined traits required of an emissary.
This verse along with the preceding verses in this chapter, all define the traits such as erudition, intellect, articulation, fearless nature required of an emissary. The format restrictions and metrical needs of the KURAL construct impose only a few traits to be spoken at a time, sometimes repeating what is said in previous verses. This is generally not an accepted norm in writing essays or poems to repeat the same or split unnaturally allied ideas in different form unless they are bullet points that explain different aspects of a sub heading, even for the sake of enforcing a thought. Most poetic or essay forms take a concept and say all allied things in one cohesive form. Of course it may not be well received if vaLLuvar is faulted for this, by the erudite community!
