கடனறிந்து காலங் கருதி இடனறிந்து
எண்ணி உரைப்பான் தலை.
(குறள் 687: தூது அதிகாரம்)
கடனறிந்து – தாம் ஆற்றவேண்டிய பணியின்னதென முற்றுமறிந்து
காலங் கருதி – ஆற்றுதற்குரிய தக்க காலத்துக்கும் பொறுத்து
இடனறிந்து – அப்பணியை ஆற்றவேண்டிய இடமும் அறிந்து
எண்ணி – பணியை நன்றாகச் சிந்தித்து
உரைப்பான் – தூதினைச் சொல்லுபவனே
தலை – அதில் சிறந்தவன்
மீண்டுமொரு இலக்கணக் குறள், தூது சொல்பவர்களின் சிறந்தவனைப் பற்றி! தாம் ஆற்றவேண்டிய பணியின்னதென முற்றுமறிந்து, ஆற்றுதற்குரிய தக்க காலத்துக்கும் பொறுத்து, அப்பணியை ஆற்ற வேண்டிய இடமும் அறிந்து, பணியைப் பற்றி நன்றாகச் சிந்தித்து, தூது சொல்லுபவனே, அச்செயலில் சிறந்தோனெனப்படுவான் என்பதே இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து.
Transliteration:
kaDanaRindhu kAlang karudhi idaNaRindhu
eNNi uRaippAn thalai
kaDanaRindhu – understanding what his duty is all about,
kAlang karudhi – knowing the right time to do it,
idaNaRindhu – and the place to do it,
eNNi – having understood about what needs to be said and how,
uRaippAn – one who does speak to opponets (as an emissary)
thalai – is the best among emissaries
Once again, a verse defining who is the best among emissaries! A person that understands what his duty is, aware of what the right time and place are to speak to the opponents and also understands what needs to be said, is the best among emissaries, says this verse.
“Aware of duty, waiting for the ripe time, knowing the right place, thoughtful,
And speaks so to opponents is the best among emissaries that’s resourceful”
