தூய்மை துணைமை துணிவுடைமை இம்மூன்றின்
வாய்மை வழியுரைப்பான் பண்பு.
(குறள் 688: தூது அதிகாரம்)
தூய்மை – உள்ளத் தூய்மையோடு, பொருள், போகம் இவற்றால் அலைக்கப்படாதவனாய்
துணைமை – செயலுக்கு துணையாகும் நல்லோரின் உதவுதலோடு
துணிவுடைமை – பகைவரிடம் பேசும்போது அஞ்சா நெஞ்சமென்று
இம்மூன்றின் வாய்மை – இம்மூன்றையும் தனக்கு வாய்க்கப்பெறுதலே
வழியுரைப்பான் – தூது சொல்பவனுக்கு இருக்கவேண்டிய
பண்பு – பண்பாகும்
தூதனுக்குத் தேவையான மேலும் மூன்று பண்பு நலன்களைச் சுட்டி மற்றுமொரு குறள். தூது உரைப்போன் உள்ளத்தூய்மை கொண்டவனாக, பிறர் ஆசை காட்டும் பொருள், போகம் போன்றவற்றில் நாட்டம் செல்லாதவனாக இருக்க வேண்டும். பகையோரிடத்தும் உள்ள நல்லோர் துணையினை சேர்த்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். பகைவரிடம் பேசும்போது அஞ்சா நெஞ்சத்தோடு தான் கூறுவதை தெளிவோடு சொல்லும் துணிவும் வேண்டும். இம்மூன்றுமே வாய்த்திருப்பது தூதனுக்குரிய இலக்கணமாகும்.
Transliteration:
thUimai thuNaimai thuNivuDaimai immUnRin
vAimai vaziyuraippAn paNbu
thUimai – with purity of heart not swayed by the lures of wealth or wordly pleasures
thuNaimai – with the companionship of good people to aid in the work,
thuNivuDaimai – with courage and fearless mind to express what needs to be said
immUnRin vAimai – having the above three
vaziyuraippAn – is an emissary
paNbu – essential trait.
This verse points to three more attributes required of an emissary that define him. They are: being pure minded and hearted, not swayed by the lures of wealth or worldy distractions of pleasures; having the companionship of good people even among the opponent camp; being fearless while speaking to opponents as an emissary to say what his side wants to convey.

Fearless to convey, are three traits of an emissary, potent”
