72: (Awareness of Venue – அவையறிதல்)
[While addressing or speaking before an august assembly of wise-men one must be aware of the venue as well as the collective erudition of such an assembly. This chapter is all about knowing what and how to speak before which gathering. Though it is said as part of etiquettes required of ministers, is applicable generally to anyone that speaks before an assembly of people. ]

அவையறிந்து ஆராய்ந்து சொல்லுக சொல்லின்
தொகையறிந்த தூய்மை யவர்.
(குறள் 711: அவையறிதல் அதிகாரம்)
அவையறிந்து – தாம் பேசுகின்ற அவையிலுள்ளோரின் அறிவாண்மையை தேர்ந்து
ஆராய்ந்து – தாம் பேசும் பொருள் அந்த அவைக்கு ஏற்புடையதாவென்று ஆராய்ந்து
சொல்லுக – ஒருவர் சொல்லவேண்டும்
சொல்லின் – சொற்களின்
தொகையறிந்த – வளப்பம் மற்றும் திறம் நன்கு அறிந்து, விலக்குவன விலக்கி, விளங்குகிற
தூய்மையவர் – தூய்மையாளர்.
சொற்களின் வளப்பமும், திறமும் அறிந்து விளங்குகிற தூய்மையோர், தாம் பேசுகின்ற அவைக்கு ஏற்புடையது எவையென்று ஆராய்ந்தே பேச தலைப்படவேண்டும், என்று சொல்லி அவையறிதல் அதிகாரத்தின் கணக்கைத் துவக்குகிறார் வள்ளுவர். தூய்மையாளர் என்றதனால் அவர்கள் தேவையான சொற்களைமட்டுமே கொண்டு, ஆகாதச் சொற்களை விலக்கி, தவிர்த்து பேசுபவர் என்பது பெறப்படுகிறது.
பழமொழிப் பாடல், “கேட்பாரை நாடிக் கிளைக்கப் படும் பொருட்கண் வேட்கை அறிந்துரைப்பார் வித்தகர்” என்கிறது. சொல்லின் தொகையென்பது, அரசோடு பறிமாறிக்கொள்கிற அமைச்சர், தூதர் போன்றோர், கொச்சைச் சொற்கள், மற்றும் அவைக்கேற்பிலாத சொற்கள் இவற்றை விலக்கியே பேசவேண்டும், என்பதைக் குறிக்கிறது.
Transliteration:
avaiyaRindhu ArAindhu solluga sollin
thogaiyaRindha thUymai yavar
avaiyaRindhu – understanding the erudition of people in assembly where one speaks
ArAindhu – and deeply pondering if the topic spoken is relevant for assembly
solluga – a person must speak!
sollin – that of words
thogaiyaRindha – blessed with copious vocabulary and the power of words
thUymaiyavar – puritans (that avoid unparliamentary and vulgar words)
Puritans with an arsenal of vocabulary that know the power of words and be devoid of unparliamentary, vulgar, meaningless words, know how to speak before an august assembly of audience, The word “thUymayavar” in this verse, implies, wise-men that avoid unparliamentary and vulgar words in general and be sure to speak words of purpose, use.

can speak carefully chosen words of wisdom and purpose indomitably”
