அவையறியார் சொல்லல்மேற் கொள்பவர் சொல்லின்
வகையறியார் வல்லதூஉம் இல்.

அவையறியார் – தாம் பேசும் அவையின் இயல்பும் ஒழுக்கும் அறியாது
சொல்லல் – பேசுதலை
மேற்கொள்பவர் – செய்பவர்
சொல்லின் – சொற்களின்
வகையறியார் – தரமும் வகைகளும் அறியாது
வல்லதூஉம் இல் – கற்றறிந்த திறனும் அற்றவராகவே கொள்ளவேண்டும்
தாம் இன்ன அவையில், இன்னார் முன்னிலையில் இவ்வாறு பேசவேண்டும் என்னும் அவையொழுக்கு இல்லாது, பேசுதலைச் செய்பவர், தாம் சொல்லும் சொற்கள் இன்ன வகையின என்னும் பாகுபாடுகளை உணராதவர், தவிர கற்றுணர்ந்த திறமும் இல்லாதவர் – என்று கடந்த குறளையே சற்று மாற்றி அவையறிந்தவர் யார் என்பதற்கு பதிலாக, அவையறியாதவர் யார் என்று உரைக்கிறார் வள்ளுவர்.
Transliteration:
avaiyaRiyAr sollalmER koLbavar sollin
vagaiyaRiyAr valladhUum il
avaiyaRiyAr – not knowing the nature and staure of the assembly where one speaks
sollal – the act of speaking
mERkoLbavar – one who goes with that
sollin – of the words
vagaiyaRiyAr – does not know the quality and categories of the words
valladhUum il – and be considered uneducated
A person that does not adhere to the norms of speaking before an assembly of authority or erudition, not understanding the nature of stature of the assembly and also how and when he must talk, does not know the categories of word, nor have the power of learning – A verse reflecting the same thought of the previous verse, by saying who and how the people who do not know to speak in an assembly are or will be.
“Does not know the nature and stature of assembly where he speaks,
a person is devoid of understanding of words and learning, blabbers!”
