உணர்வ துடையார்முன் சொல்லல் வளர்வதன்
பாத்தியுள் நீர்சொரிந் தற்று.

உணர்வது உடையார்முன் – பிறர் உணர்த்தாது இயற்கையான புரிதல் உடைத்த அவையினர் முன்பு
சொல்லல் – பேசுவதென்பது
வளர்வதன் – தானாகவே வளர்கின்ற பயிர் செழிக்க
பாத்தியுள் – அது நடப்பட்டிருக்கும் பாத்தியினுள்
நீர் சொரிந்தற்று – நீரை இட்டார் போலாம்
பிறர் எடுத்துச் சொல்லாமல், தாமாகவே புரிந்துகொள்ளும் ஆற்றலை உடையோரைக் கொண்ட அவையிலே ஒருவர் பேசுவதென்பது, தாமாகவே வளர்கின்ற பயிர் நடப்பட்டிருக்கும் பாத்தியிலே நீர் பெய்தார் போன்றதாம். பரிமேலழகர் உரை, “தானே வளரும் ஒன்று தண்ணீரால் மிக்க வளர்ச்சி அடைவது என்பது போல்” என்று பொருள் செய்துள்ளார்.
ஆனால், தாமாக வளரும் பயிருக்குத் தண்ணீர் பாய்ச்சுவானேன் என்ற கேள்விதான் எழுகிறது! அதேபோல் தாமாக புரிந்து கொள்வார்க்குச் தனியாக ஒருவர் சொல்லவேண்டியது ஏன், என்ற கேள்வியும் எழுகிறது!
ஒருவேளை, தாமாக புரிந்துகொள்ளும் உணர்வுடையோர்க்குச் சொல்லுதலும், தாமாக வளரும் பயிருக்கு நீர் இடலும் தேவையில்லாத ஒன்றென்று வள்ளுவர் கூறுவதாகவும் பொருள் கொள்ளலாமோ?
இதிலே “தாமாகவே வளர்கின்ற பயிர்” என்ற பரிமேலழகரின் கொண்டுகூட்டிய பொருள் பொருந்தவில்லை. அதில்லாமல் இருந்தால், புரிதல் உடையார் நிறைந்த அவையிலே சொல்லப்படுகிற சொல்லானது வளர்கின்ற பயிருள்ள பாத்திக்கு நீர் பெய்தார் போல, வளர்ச்சியை மேலும் பெருக்குவது போலாகும் என்றும் கொள்ளலாம்.
பெரும்பாலும் மற்றோர் உரைகளும் பரிமேலழகர் உரையொட்டியே செல்கின்றன!
Transliteration:
uNarva dhuDaiyArmun sollal vaLarvadhan
pAththiyuL nIrsorin dhaRRu
uNarvadhu uDaiyArmun – In the assembly of scholarly that understand on their own
sollal – to speak
vaLarvadhan – a plant or crops that grows on its own (without nurturing or feeding)
pAththiyuL – in the bed of those plants or crops
nIr sorindhaRRu – like pouring water
To speak before an assembly of percpetive scholars, is like pouring water to the bed of plants which grow on their own. Parimelazhagar’s commentary implies that which grows automatically may see further growth by water poured. In a way, to tell perceptive audience or to pour water to the plants that grow on their own is futile and unnecessary. Perhaps that’s how vaLLuvar intended this verse to mean.
Nowhere in the verse, is there any word that means a plant growing on its own. It seems to be Parimelazhagar’s own interpretation and adopted by the herd of later commentators also. We can simply interpret this verse as this: “The words spoken in the assembly of perceptive scholars is like pouring water to the self-growing bed of plants – earlier to enhance the understanding and the later to to aid their growth of plants further”.
