கொளற்கரிதாய்க் கொண்டகூழ்த் தாகி அகத்தார்
நிலைக்கெளிதாம் நீரது அரண்.

கொளற்கு அரிதாய்க் – வசப்படுத்துவதற்கு கடினமானதாய் (பலவித பொறிகளைக் கொண்டும்)
கொண்ட கூழ்த்தாகி – பல்வகை உணவுப்பொருள்களையும் தன்னகத்தே மிகுந்த அளவில் கொண்டு
அகத்தார் – கோட்டைக்குள் இருக்கும் மக்களும், படைவீரர்களும்
நிலைக்கு எளிதாம் – பல காலமும் வாழும் நிலையை எளிதாக்கும்
நீரது – சிறந்த தன்மையது
அரண் – அரணெனப்படும்
பகைவர்களால், படை வலிமை கொண்டும், பல பொறிகளாலும் வசப்படுத்தமுடியாத அளவுக்கு உறுதியானதாகவும், அரணுக்குள்ளே இருக்கும் குடிமக்களுக்கும், படைவீரர்களுக்கும், நெடுங்காலத்துக்குப் போதுமான அளவுக்கு உணவுப் பொருள்கள் தன்னகத்தே உடைத்து அவர்கள் வாழும் நிலையை எளிதாக்கும் சிறந்த தன்மையதே அரணாகும்.
பகைவர்கள் முற்றுகை பலகாலம் நீடிக்கும் ஆகையால், அரணுக்குள் இருப்பவர்கள் உணவுப் பொருள்களுக்காக வருந்தாமல் இருக்கத் தகுந்த சேமிப்பு இருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதைச் சொல்லுகிற குறள். மற்றபடி அரணென்பது பகைவர் வசப்படுத்தற்கு அரிதாக இருக்கவேண்டுமென்கிற கருத்து முன்பே சொல்லப்பட்டது.
Transliteration:
koLarkkariyadAik koNDakUzhth thAgi agaththAr
nilaikkeLidAm nIradhu araN
koLarkk(u) ariyadAik – Difficult to capture by enemies even with their massive army and artilleries
koNDa kUzhththAgi – and with enough food stored to last a long drawn battle period
agaththAr – for the people inside the fort (citizens and the solidiers)
nilaikk(u) eLidAm – to make it easy for people to live comfortably inside the fort during wars.
nIradhu – having such excellent attributes
araN – is a fortress.
A good fortress is that which is strong and difficult to conquer even with the strongest of armies and artilleries of enemies with enough food in store to last long to support the people inside during the times when enemies have surrounded them for prolonged periods, says this verse.
When enemies surround a fort, it can last long to suffocate the people inside to exhaust all their supplies and starve them to weaken their will to fight. A fort should anticipate such situations and plan for the food supplies to outlast the enemies camping strategy and capcity. This thought seems to be the predominant intent of this verse.
Difficult to conquer with long lasting food supplies for people inside
And to withstand and fight enemies long is the best fortress to reside”
