எல்லாப் பொருளும் உடைத்தாய் இடத்துதவும்
நல்லாள் உடையது அரண்.
(குறள் 746: அரண் அதிகாரம்)
எல்லாப் பொருளும் – வேண்டிய படைக்கலன்களும், உணவும்
உடைத்தாய் – தன்னகத்தே பகைவர்தம் முற்றுகையை தாங்குமளவுக்குக் கொண்டு
இடத்துதவும் நல்லாள் – உள்ளிருந்து வெளிப்பகையை அடக்கும் திறன் கொண்ட நல்ல வீரர்கள், வெற்றிதரும் தெய்வப்பெண்ணை
உடையது அரண்.- இவர்களைக் கொண்டது ஓர் அரணாகும்
வேண்டிய படைக்கலன்களும், உணவுப் பொருள்களும், மற்ற எல்லாவித போர்க்காலத் தேவைகளையும் தன்னகத்தே உடையதாய், பகைவரோடு பொருதி அவரை அடக்கும் நல்ல வீரர்களையும் தன்னகத்தே கொண்டதே நல்ல அரண் எனப்படும். மீண்டும் ஒரு அதிகார நிரப்பியாக, இதுவரைக்கும் சொல்லப்படாத ஒன்றும் புதிதாகச் சொல்லாத குறளோ என்று ஐயப்பட வைக்கும் குறள். ஆனால் பழந்தமிழ் குடிமக்கள் தங்கள் பலத்தோடு, இறையருளும் தேவை என்பதை நம்பினார்கள், உணர்ந்திருந்தார்கள் என்பதை உணர்த்தும் குறளாகவே இது தோன்றுகிறது.
நல்லாள் என்பதை நல்ல வீரர்கள் என்று மற்ற உரையாசிரியர்கள் சொன்னாலும், அது ஒரு வீரனைக் குறிப்பதாக தோன்றுகிறது. ஆனால் கோட்டைக்குக் காவல்தெய்வமாக பெண்தெய்வத்தை பெரும்பாலும் வழிபடுவதும், அல்லது முனீசுவரை வழிபடுவது, தமிழர் வழக்கமாக இருந்திருப்பதால், இங்கு காவல் தெய்வமாகிய பெண்தெய்வத்தைக் குறிப்பதாகக் கொள்வதுதான் பொருந்தும். தவிர, பெண்ணைச் “சக்தி” வடிவிலே பார்ப்பதும், கொற்றவை வழிபாடு தமிழ்குடிகளின் போர்க்கடவுளாகவும் காவல் தெய்வ வழிபாடாகவும் இருந்திருப்பதால், இக்குறளில் கூறப்பட்ட நல்லாள் என்னும் சொல் கோட்டைக் காவல் தெய்வத்தையே குறிப்பதாகக் கொள்ளலாம்.
Transliteration:
ellAp poruLum uDaiththAi iDaththudhavum
nallAL uDaiyadhu araN
ellAp poruLum – Required supplies of both arsenal power as well as food
uDaiththAi – having them to last longer
iDaththudhavum nallAL – to quell the enemies, enough soldiers, (or) the Goddess of success that guards the fortress (her blessings)
uDaiyadhu araN – having such protection is the best of fortification.
Along with all the foods supplies and the arsenal to sustain as long as the enemies surround the fort to attack, a fort should also have good soldiers that can protect the fort – says many commentators either interpreting on their own or following others. It makes us think if this verse is a chapter-filler and has nothing new to say. But there are ample literary evidences that Tamils have always believed in the power above us as Goddess and every fort has had a “Protecting Goddess”.
The word “nallAL” in this verse has been interpreted as “ good soldiers” by almost all commentators. A singular word cannot represent a battalion of soldiers. The word implies a “good goddess” that protects the fort. Tamils have always worshipped “Muneeswaran” or “KoRRavai” as their deities to stand behind them in their war pursuits. It makes sense to interpret it along these lines and construe “nallAL” refers to “koRRavai” in this verse.
