முற்றியும் முற்றா தெறிந்தும் அறைப்படுத்தும்
பற்றற் கரியது அரண்.

முற்றியும் – முற்றுகையால் சூழ்ந்தும்
முற்றாது எறிந்தும் – அவ்வாறு முற்றுகையிடாமல் படைக்கருவிகளைக்கொண்டு உடைத்தும்
அறைப்படுத்தும் – உள்ளிருப்போரை வைத்தே வஞ்சத்தால் வீழ்த்தியும்
பற்றற்கு அரியது – கைப்பற்றுதற்கு கடினமானதாக இருப்பதே
அரண் – ஒரு நல்ல அரணாகும்
அரணெனப்படுவது அரசுக்குக் காப்பாகும். அக்காப்பை நெடுங்கால முற்றுகையாலும், அல்லது போர்க்கருவிகளால் உடைத்தெறிந்தும், அல்லது உள்ளிருப்போரைக் கொண்டே வஞ்சத்தாலும் வீழ்த்த பகைவர்கள் முயல்வர். இத்தகைய முயற்சிகளை முறியடித்து உறுதியுடன் நிற்கவல்ல அரணே காப்பாகும்.
நெடுங்கால முற்றுகையால் உள்ளிருப்போரின் உறுதியைக் குறைப்பது ஒருவகைப் போர்த் தந்திரம். கோட்டையை படைக்கருவிகளால் உடைத்தெரியவும் பகைவர்கள் முயல்வர். இவையெல்லாம் முடியவில்லையென்றால் உள்ளிருக்கும் சில ஐந்தாம்படை ஆட்களைக்கொண்டு, வஞ்சித்தும் ஒரு கோட்டையை வீழ்த்த பகைவர் முயலுவர். இத்தகைய முயற்சிகளை முறியடித்து உறுதியாக நிற்பதே ஒரு அரண் என்பதைச் சொல்லும் குறள்.
Transliteration:
muRRiyum muRRa dherindhum aRaippaDuththum
paRRaR ariyadhu araN
muRRiyum – raising a siege
muRRadh(u) erindhum – without siege, fighting to capture
aRaippaDuththum – or by cunning, using the people within the fort
paRRaRk(u) ariyadhu – making it difficult for enemies to capture or make it fall
araN – of such strength is the fotress
An excellent fortification is that which does not fall or be captured, when enemies attempt to siege, or fight to make it fall or use cunning to use people inside to aide their effort.
Diminishing the will to resist and fight by prolonged effort of siege is strategy adoped in wars; or assault with heavy artilleries to break the fort is a direct tactic; or use cunning to use people inside to work against to make the fort fall. A strong fortress is one such withstands all such attempts.
