அருளென்னும் அன்பீன் குழவி பொருளென்னும்
செல்வச் செவிலியால் உண்டு.

அருளென்னும் – கருணையென்னும்
அன்பு ஈன் குழவி – அன்பு பெற்ற குழந்தைச் செல்வம்
பொருளென்னும் – ஆக்கமென்னும்
செல்வச் – பொருட்செல்வமாம்
செவிலியால் உண்டு – வளர்ப்புத் தாயால் வளருவதாகும்
அன்பெனும் பண்பு பெற்றெடுத்த குழந்தைச் செல்வமாம் கருணை, ஆக்கமென்னும் பொருட்செல்வமாம் வளர்ப்புத் தாயால் வளர்க்கப்படுவதாகும். பொருள் இருப்போர்க்கே அறம் செய்தல் ஏதுவாகும் என்பதைச் சொல்லும் குறள். அரசானாலும், குடிமக்களானாலும், பொருள் ஈட்டுவதால் மட்டுமே, அவர்களின் அன்பின் காரணமாக வருங் கருணையால் பிறர்க்கு நன்மை செய்ய இயலும்.
இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து நயமிக்கதாயிருந்தாலும், சொல்வதாக மணக்குடவர் சொல்வதும், பரிமேலழகர் சொல்வதும் முற்றிலும் தருவித்துக் கொள்ளப்பட்ட பொருளென்றே தோன்றுகிறது. எவ்வாறு இவ்வதிகாரத்துக்குப் பொருந்துவது என்று யாருமே கேட்காதது வியப்புக்குரியதே?
வெற்றி வேட்கையில் சொல்லப்படும், “செல்வருக்கழகு செழுங்கிளைத் தாங்குதல்” என்ற வாசகத்தை, செழுங்கிளைத் தாங்க செல்வராய் இருத்தலும், அதற்காக பொருள் ஈட்டும் வகை அறிதலும் தேவை என்று கொள்வதுபோல, இக்குறளையும் நோக்கவேண்டுமோ?
Transliteration:
aruLennum anbIn kuzhavi poruLennum
selvach cheviliyAl uNDu
aruLennum – kindliness
anb(u) In kuzhavi – that is born out of love
poruLennum – the object
selvach – that is wealth, is
cheviliyAl uNDu – foster monther that brings up with kindliness
Kindliness is the child of love, to be nurtured by the foster mother that wealth is. The verse does not convey anything directly to convey the intent of this chapter. The construed meaning is that only wealth will enable meaningful love and kindly act, be it by the rule or by the citizens.
Though the verse seemingly conveys an elevated thought, it seems to be entirely construed and conveyed by the commentators ParimElazhagar and MaNakkuDavar. It is even surprising how others have just written a direct translation without discussing merits or fit of this verse in this chapter. It reminds
VeTrivETkai, a work by “adhi vIraramapAnDyA” says “To support relatives and friends is the duty of wealthy”. Alternatively the interpretation can be, unless the ways of making wealth are pursued, a kindly act of compassion is not possible. Perhaps that’s how we have to interpret this verse too.
“Wealth, the nurturing foster mother, needs to be made
for kindliness, the child of love, to blossom and spread”

அன்னையால் பேணப்ப டும்.
(அன்பு பெற்ற செல்வம் அருள். அது ஆக்கமென்னும் நல்ல வளர்க்குமன்னையால் காப்பாற்றப்படும்)
