சுழலும் இசைவேண்டி வேண்டா உயிரார்
கழல்யாப்புக் காரிகை நீர்த்து.
(குறள் 777: படைச்செருக்கு அதிகாரம்)
சுழலும் – இவ்வுலகைச் சுற்றி நின்று நிலைத்திருக்கும்
இசைவேண்டி – புகழை விரும்பி
வேண்டா உயிரார் – தம்முயிரையும் வேண்டாத வீரர்
கழல் – காலில் வீரக் கழல், வெற்றித் தண்டை
யாப்புக் – அணிதல்
காரிகை – அழகு (சேர்க்கும்)
நீர்த்து – சிறப்பாகும்
இக்குறள் வீரர்கள் அணியும் வெற்றித்தண்டையானது அவர்களுக்கு எவ்வாறு சிறப்பான அணியாகிறது என்பதைச் சொல்லும் குறள். நிலைத்திருக்கும் புகழை வேண்டி, தம்முயிரையும் துச்சமாகக் கருதும் வீரப்பெருமக்கள் காலில் அணியும் வீரக்கழலானது அவ்வீரத்துக்கு அழகு சேர்க்கும் சிறப்பாகும்.
Transliteration:
Suzhalum isaivENDi vENDA uyirAr
kazhalyAppuk kArikai nIrththu
Suzhalum – Lasting and widespread
isaivENDi – fame and renown desiring
vENDA uyirAr – such valiant warriors, will even forsake their lives.
kazhal – the leg-anklet
yAppuk – adorning, wearing that (leg-anklet)
kArikai – brings beauty
nIrththu – is indicative of the glory of their valor
This verse speaks of the anklet that warriors wear on their leg, indicative of the glory of their valor. Adoring such anket adds beauty to their glory of the warriors of great valor that would even forsake their lives for the sake of sustained and widespread fame and renown.
“The ornament of leg-anket adds to the beauty of glorious men of valor
That would forsake even life, desiring of widespread renown of honor”
