உறின்உயிர் அஞ்சா மறவர் இறைவன்
செறினும் சீர்குன்றல் இலர்.
(குறள் 778: படைச்செருக்கு அதிகாரம்)
உறின் – (போர் ) வருமாயின்
உயிர் அஞ்சா மறவர் – அதில் தம்முயிர் போவது பற்றி அஞ்சாமல் போர் புரியும் வீரர்கள்
இறைவன் – தம்மை ஆள்வோரே
செறினும் – அடக்கினாலும், (வேண்டாமென்று தடுத்தாலும்)
சீர்குன்றல் இலர் – தம் வீரமென்னும் சீர் குறைவதிலார்.
பல உரைகளில், செறினும் என்பதை சினந்து, முனிந்து என்று பொருள் செய்திருந்தாலும், அடக்குதல் என்பதே சரியாக இருக்கும். சில நேரங்களில், பகைமேல் பொருத வேண்டாமென்று ஆள்வோர்கள் நினைந்து தம் வீரர்கள பகைமேல் செல்லாது அடக்குவர். ஆனால் போரு வருமாயின், அதில் தம்முயிர் போவதுபற்றியும் கவலையில்லாது, அஞ்சாமல் போர் புரியும் வீர மறவர்கள், தம்முடைய ஆள்வோனே, எக்காரணம்பற்றியாயினும் தம்மை செல்லாது அடக்கினாலும், தம் வீரமாகிய சீரில் குறைவதில்லை, அரசே தடுத்தாலும், பகைமேல் செல்லுவர்.
வீரத்தைச் சொல்லுவதாகச் சொன்னாலும், அரசுக்குக் கட்டுப்படாத வீரம் அரசுக்கு எதிரானதே! அரசுக்குக் கீழ் பணிபுரியும் வீரருக்கே அரசின் சொல்லில் மதிப்பில்லையானால், பகைவருக்கு எப்படி இருக்கும்? வீரரைச் சிறப்பித்துச் சொல்லுகையில், அவர்கள் அரசை மீறிச் செயல்படுவதைப் பெருமையாகச் சொல்வது தவறல்லவா? வீரர்கள் போரை விரும்புதல் நாட்டைக் காக்கவே, அதை ஒரு அனுமதிக்கப்பட்ட அழிவை உண்டாக்க அல்ல. அமைதியை விரும்புவதும், ஆனால் பகைவர் தாக்கவந்தால் போரிடுவதும்தாம் உண்மையான வீரமேயன்றி, தோள்கள் தினவெடுத்ததென்று, அரசினையும் மீறி போர் புரிவதல்ல!
Transliteration:
uRinuyir anjA maRavar iRaivan
seRinum sIrkunRal ilar
uRin – if (the war) comes their way
uyir anjA maRavar – without worrying about losing their lives the valiant warriors that fight
iRaivan – the ruler
seRinum – even if the prevent (not to go and fight for whatever reason)
sIrkunRal ilar – will not diminish in their valor ( and would fight still)
Though almost all commentaries interpret the word “seRinum” as “angered”, it makes sense to interpret it as “suppress”. Sometimes, a ruler may decide to not proceed with the war and ask his warriors to wait or stop. But, warriors that do not worry about losing their lives, would still without diminishing in the glory of their valor, go fighting with their enemies.
It is acceptable to highlight the valor of warriors; but it is improper to imply going against the rule or ruler’s order. It is wrong even to suggest treason; Warriors should desire war to save from enemies, but not to create destruction without permission the ruler. Fighting, even forsaking life, otherwise keeping peace is true valor, not superseding the ruler’s order.
