புரந்தார்கண் நீர்மல்கச் சாகிற்பின் சாக்காடு

புரந்தார் – தம்மைக் காக்கும் ஆட்சியாளரின்
கண் நீர்மல்கச் – கண்களில் நீர்பெருகி தாம் செய்த வீரச்செயல்களை நினைவு கொள்ளுமாறு
சாகிற்பின் – வீரமரணம் அடைவதென்றால்
சாக்காடு – அம்மரணமானது
இரந்துகோள் – பிச்சையாகவாவது கொள்ளும்
தக்கது உடைத்து – பெருமையை உடையது.
தம்மைக் காக்கும் ஆட்சியாளர்கள், இத்தகு வீரச்செயல்களைப் புரிந்த வீரர் இறந்துபட்டாரே என்று வருந்தி கண்களில் நீர்ப்பெருக அடையும் வீரமரணத்தைப் பிச்சையென்றாகிலும் கேட்டுப்பெறக்கூடிய பெருமையை உடையது, என்கிறது இக்குறள். வெற்றி அல்லது வீரமரணம் என்பதையே தங்கள் வாழ்வின் அடையாளமாகக் கொண்ட மறவரது பெருமையைச் சாற்றும் குறளிது.
கும்பகருணந் வதை படலத்தில், கம்பர், “ நீர்க்கோல வாழ்வை நச்சி நெடிதுநாள் வளர்த்துப் பின்னைப் போர்க்கோலம் செய்து விட்டாற்கு உயிர்கொடாதங்குப் போகேன்” என்பார். அதாவது, நீரில் வரைந்த கோலம் போன்றதான குறுகிய வாழ்க்கையைக் காப்பாற்றிக் கொள்ள, இத்தனை நாள் வளர்த்து ஆளாக்கி இந்தப் போர்க்களத்திற்கு அனுப்பி வைத்த அண்ணனுக்காக தன் உயிரைத் தராமல் இராமன் பக்கம் போகமாட்டேன் எனக் கூறும் கும்பகர்ணனின் நெஞ்சுரம் அவனை உயர்ந்த கொள்கையும், செஞ்சோற்றுக் கடன் கொண்டவனாகவும் இராவணனுக்குத் தொண்டு செய்வதையே தனது வாழ்நாள் குறிக்கோளாக அமைத்துக் கொண்டவன் எனவும் காட்டுகிறது.
மகாபாரதத்திலும் துரியோதனுக்காகப் போரிட்டு மறைந்த மாரதர்கள் மாண்ட பிறகு, வருந்தி துரியோதனன் கலங்கும் காட்சிகள் பலவுண்டு, குறிப்பாகக் கர்ணனின் சாவுக்கு துரியோதனின் கண்ணீரே இக்குறளுக்கு ஏற்ற எடுத்துக்காட்டு.
Transliteration:
puranthArkaN nIrmalga chAgirpin chAkkADu
irandukOL thakkdu uDaiththu
puranthAr – the ruler that protected the valiant under His mighty and righteous rule
kaN nIrmalga – to have tears in His eyes remembering the heroic acts of the soldier
chAgirpin – if this soldier dies
chAkkADu – such a death
irandukOL – even if obtained by begging
thakkdu uDaiththu – is a glorious one.
For the ruler to remember the brave and valiant acts of the soldier in the battle field and tear in gratitude even for a moment, the death for a solider in the battled field is a glorious one to get, even obtained as alms by begging. This verse sings the glory of brave solidiers that live by the slogan “Victory or Valiant death”
Epic stories of Ramayana and MahAbAratA have specific incidents where both villains of these epics remember in grattitude , the valiant deaths of their loyals in KumbakarNa and many a great warriors in MahAbAratA. Kumbakarna refuses to VibhIshana, saying that it was his duty to fight for his king who had protected him all these years, and he was not afraid of death in this impermanent life of drawing decorative patterns on water.
Similarly in MahAbAratA, many a warriors died for DhuryOdanA that brought tears of gratitude to DhuryOdanA. However the death of KarNa was an insurmountable loss to him, which made him cry in gratitude.
“A valiant death that would bring tears of gratitude to the ruler
is worth its glory, even if got as alms of begging for a soldier”
