செயற்கரிய யாவுள நட்பின் அதுபோல்
வினைக்கரிய யாவுள காப்பு.

செயற்கரிய – ஈட்டிக்கொள்வதற்கு அரியதானது, (கடினமானது)
யாவுள நட்பின் – நட்பைவிட யாதுளது? (நல்ல நட்பை அடைவது எளிதல்ல என்று உணர்த்தப்படுகிறது!)
அதுபோல் – அதைப்போல
வினைக்கரிய – ஒருவர் செய்யும் செயல்களுக்கு கிடைத்தற்கு அருமையான
யாவுள காப்பு – சிறந்த பாதுகாப்பாக வேறு யாதுளது?
ஒரு நல்ல நட்பை ஈட்டுவது என்பது ஒரு அரிய செயலாகும். ஒருவருக்கு நல்ல நட்பைவிட ஈட்டுவதை விட சிறந்த பொருள் வேறு எதுவாக இருக்கமுடியும்? அதைவிட அரிய செயல் என்னவாக இருக்கமுடியும்? அவ்வாறு அரிய நட்பை ஈட்டிய பிறகு, பகைவர்களால் செய்யப்படும் தீவினைக்களுக்கு எதிரான பாதுக்காப்பு நல்ல நட்பை விட வேறு எது இருக்கமுடியும் என்று வினவி இவ்வதிகாரத்தைத் துவக்குகிறார் வள்ளுவர்.
மூலக் குறளின் கேள்வி வடிவத்திலே மாற்றுக்குறள் எழுதப்பட்டாலும், நேரடியாகப் பொருளைச் சொல்லும் விதமாகவும் மற்றொருக் குறள் எழுதப்பட்டது. நன்மையே செய்யக்கூடிய நல்ல நட்பு என்பது கிடைப்பதற்கு அரியதாகும். எவ்வாறு பகை வந்தாலும், அதை எதிர்த்து, காக்கக்கூடியதில் அவ்வாறு அடைந்த நட்பினைத் தவிர வேறு எதுவுமில்லை.
Transliteration:
seyaRkariya yAvuLa naTpin adhupOl
vinaikariya yAvuLa kAppu?
seyaRkariya – difficult to earn
yAvuLa naTpin – what else is other than a good friendship? (a good friendship is hard to find)
adhupOl – Like a good friendship
vinaikariya – for the deeds of a person
yAvuLa kAppu? – what else could assure safe execution (other than a good friendship)?
To earn a good friendship is an arduous task. What else can be an asset for somebody to earn better than a good friendship? What else is more difficult to get than a friendship? After earning such a reliable friendship, to help during adverse times, or to accomplish difficult tasks, what else can be a better help than a friendship? Thus asking such questions, vaLLuvar commences this chapter.
To clarify the intent of the verse, apart from the alternate verse that goes in the same questioning format, a more direct verse is also given. To have a great and good friendship is hard; to stand against enemies in any form, there is none better to protect either.
