நட்பிற் குறுப்புக் கெழுதகைமை மற்றதற்கு
உப்பாதல் சான்றோர் கடன்.
(குறள் 802: பழைமை அதிகாரம்)
நட்பிற்கு – ஒரு நல்ல நட்புக்கு
உறுப்புக் – அங்கமாவது
கெழுதகைமை – நண்பர்கள் ஒருவருக்கு ஒருவர் வழங்கிக்கொள்ளும் உரிமை
மற்று அதற்கு – தவிரவும் அதற்கு
உப்பாதல் – உட்படுதலும் உடன்படுதலும்
சான்றோர் – நட்பினைப் போற்றும் சான்றோர்க்கு
கடன் – முறையுமாம்
முதிர்ந்த நட்புக்கிடையே இருக்கவேண்டிய சிறந்த புரிதலை, வலியுறுத்தும் குறள். இருவருக்கிடையிலான சிறந்த நட்புக்கு அங்கமாகக் கருதப்படுவது, நண்பர்கள் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் வழங்கிக்கொள்ளும், எடுத்துக்கொள்ளும் உரிமையாகும். தவிரவும், அத்தகைய உரிமைக்கு உட்படுதலும் உடன்படுதலும் நட்பினைப் போற்றும் கற்றறிந்தோர்க்கு முறைமையுமாம்.
சான்றோர்கள் நட்பானது ஒருவரையொருவர் நன்கு புரிந்துகொண்டது! அதனாலேயே உரிமை எடுத்துக்கொள்ளக்கூடியது. அதனாலேயே அதனை அவர்க்குக் கடமையாகவும் சொல்லப்படுகிறது இக்குறளில்.
Transliteration:
naTpiR kuRuppuk kezhuthagaimai maRRadaRku
uppAdal sAnROr kaDan
naTpiRk(u) – for a good friendship
uRuppuk – a part of that is
kezhuthagaimai – right to be free and take rights with each other
maRR(u) adaRku – Other than that,
uppAdal – to be in conformance and be subject to such right
sAnROr – the wise who respect such friendship
kaDan – is the duty.
A verse which stresses on the importance of innate understanding that must exist in a long friendship. Taking and according liberty with/ to each other is a constituent part of any close, long and sustaining friendship. To value that and be subject to that is proper for wise that respect such friendship.
In other words, the friendship of wisemen is based on implicit understanding and allows freedom and right to express thoughts freely. Hence it is said as their duty also, in this verse.
“Long sustained friendship gives and takes liberty
For wisemen, it is implicit to take it as such a duty”
