பழகிய நட்பெவன் செய்யுங் கெழுதகைமை
செய்தாங்கு அமையாக் கடை.
(குறள் 803: பழைமை அதிகாரம்)
பழகிய நட்பு – பழகிய பல நாள் நட்பு என்பதால்
எவன் செய்யுங் – என்ன பயன்?
கெழுதகைமை – உரிமையில்
செய்தாங்கு – நண்பர் செய்தவற்றை
அமையாக் கடை – தாமும் அவற்றோடு ஒப்பியிருப்பதுபோல் செய்யாதவொன்று?
பலநாள் பழகிய நட்பு என்பதன் பொருளென்ன? அவ்வுரிமையில் தம் நண்பர் செய்தவொன்றை தாமே செய்தால் போன்று எண்ணி நண்பரோடு ஒப்பியிருக்காத நட்பு பழைய நட்பு என்பதால் பயன் என்ன? என்கிறது இக்குறள்.
இது நீதி என்பதற்குப் புறம்பாகச் சொல்லுகிற குறளாக இருக்கிறது. உதாரணமாக ஆட்சியிலோ, ஒரு பொறுப்பான பதவியிலோ, அல்லது நீதி வழங்குகிற நிலையிலோ இருப்பவர்களால், இக்குறள் சொல்லும் முறையிலே வாழ்வது இயலாது. பழகிய நட்பு என்பதற்காக் ஒரு நண்பர் செய்யும் எல்லாவற்றுடனும் ஒப்பியிருப்பது தவறு, இவ்வதிகாரத்தை ஒட்டிய கருத்தாக இருப்பினும் கூட.
Transliteration:
Pazhagiya naTpevan seyyung kezhutagaimai
seydAngu amaiyAk kaDai
Pazhagiya naTp(u) – A friendship that’s long standing
evan seyyung – what use is in it (the friendship)
Kezhutagaimai – taking liberty
seydAngu – in whatever the friend has done
amaiyAk kaDai – be agreeable and act in support of friendship
What is the use in a long-standing friendship, if taking liberty because of that friendship, when a friend is in acts that even not are agreeable, not able to support?
This verse seems to preach what is not in line with sense of justice. For example, a person of responsibility, or rendering justice cannot live the way of what this verse advocates. Just because of long-standing friendship, one shall not agree with whatever another friend does, though this verse is perfectly in line with the chapter’s central thought of standing by long standing friendship. In fact previous chapter said that a long-standing friendship should take the liberty to mend and correct a friend instead of supporting wrong deeds.
