செய்தேமஞ் சாராச் சிறியவர் புன்கேண்மை
எய்தலின் எய்தாமை நன்று.
(குறள் 815: தீநட்பு அதிகாரம்)
செய்து ஏமஞ் – அரண் செய்தாலும்
சாராச் – அதுவும் காக்காத தன்மை கொண்டதாகிய
சிறியவர் – கீழ் மக்களின்
புன்கேண்மை – தீய நட்பை
எய்தலின் – கொள்ளுதலினும்
எய்தாமை நன்று – கொள்ளாமை நன்று
இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து எளிமையானது. அரண் செய்து காக்க நினைத்தாலும், அதுவும் காக்க முடியாத தன்மை கொண்டதாகிய கீழ் மக்களின் தீய நட்பை கொள்ளுதலினும் கொள்ளாமை நன்று. சில நேரங்களில் நம்மை நாம் நற்பண்புகள் என்னும் அரணால் காத்துக்கொண்டால், எவருடைய நட்பு, அது தீயதாக இருந்தாலும், என்ன செய்துவிடமுடியும் என்று தோன்றுவது இயற்கை. இக்குறள் அத்தகைய நம்பிக்கை பொய்த்துப்போகும் வகையான தீய நட்பைக் கூறுகிறார் வள்ளுவர்.
Transliteration:
Seidemanj chArA siRiyavar punkENmai
Eidaling eidAmai nanRu
Seid(u) emanj – even if fortified well
chArA – even that cannot protect the ill effects of
siRiyavar – lowly person’s
punkENmai – evil friendship
Eidaling – instead of having such friendship
eidAmai nanRu – it is good not have such friendships
The verse puts forth a simple thought. Since, even with strong fortification of values and virtues, we cannot protect from the ill-effetcs brought forth by the evil friendship, it is good not to have such friendships at all. It is but natural that, if we are strongly convinced about our good virtues and values, to underestimate the effects of ill caused evil friendship; such faith of fortifications will be undermined in the vicinity of evil friendship; and hence it is prudent to be cautious and desist such.
