கனவினும் இன்னாது மன்னோ வினைவேறு
சொல்வேறு பட்டார் தொடர்பு.
(குறள் 819: தீநட்பு அதிகாரம்)
கனவினும் – கனவிலும் வந்து உறுத்தும்
இன்னாது மன்னோ – துன்பம் அன்றோ?
வினைவேறு – செய்யும் செயல் வேறாய்
சொல் வேறுபட்டார் – ஆனால் சொன்ன் சொல் வேறாய் இருப்பவர்கள்தம்
தொடர்பு – நட்புறவு!
சிலர் நன்றாகத் தேனொழுகப் பேசுவர். நமக்கு நன்மை பயக்கச் செய்வதுபோல் இருக்கும். ஆனால் அவர்களது செயலாக்கம் முற்றிலும் மாறுபட்டு இருக்கும். நம் நம்பிக்கையைக் குலைப்பதாக இருக்கும். அத்தகையோரத்ய் தொடர்பு பற்றி கூறும் குறளிது. சொல்லும் சொல்லால் ஒன்று சொல்லி, அவர்கள் செயல்பாடுகள் மாறுபட்டு வேறாயும் இருப்பவர்களின் நட்பு கனவிலும் வந்து உறுத்தும் துன்பம் அன்றோ? ஆதலால் அத்தகு நட்பைக் கொள்ளாதீர்.
இதோ ஒரு நாலடியார் பாடல் இக்கருத்தையே கூறுகிறது
யா அர் ஒருவர் ஒருவர்தம் உள்ளத்தைத்
தேருந் துணைமை யுடையவர் – சாரல்
கனமணி நின்றிமைக்கும் நாடகேள் மக்கள்
மனம்வேறு செய்கையும் வேறு.
இப்பாடலின் கருத்து: மலைச் சாரல்களில் ஒளிவிடும் மணிகள் மிகுந்திருக்கும் நாட்டையுடைய அரசனே! கேட்பாயாக! உலகில் ஒருவருடைய மனத்தில் உள்ள எண்ணத்தை அறியும் வல்லமையுடையவர் யார் இருக்கிறார்கள்? ஏனெனில், மக்களின் மனம் வேறாக இருக்கிறது! சொல் வேறாக இருக்கிறது! செயல் வேறாக இருக்கிறது! ஒருவர் நினைத்தபடி, சொன்னபடி, செய்யாமல் வஞ்சனை புரிதலால் அவருடன் தொடர்பு கொள்ள அஞ்ச வேண்டும் என்பதாம்.
Transliteration:
Kanavilnum innAdu mannO vinaivERu
solveru paTTAr thoDarbu
Kanavilnum – Even in dreams
innAdu mannO – is n’t it wreaking pain?
vinaivERu – their deeds are different (contrary to what their words are)
sol verupaTTAr – from what they say they would do
thoDarbu – to such people as friends?
Some speak so sweetly as if they would all good for us; but their deeds are quite contrary to their words, destroying our faith in them and their friendship. By asking a question, vaLLuvar wants us to ponder the worth of keeping such friendship! Their words would say something, but acts would be quite contrary to their words, often inflicting pain; Don’t such friendships are pain to us even in dreams? – asks vaLLuvar. Hence one must reconsider continuing such friendships.
The other side of the coin is that, even if a friend sounds admonishingly harsh, if their deeds are well meaning such friendships should also be considered. They would not be causing pain in the dream. Of course, in this verse, vaLLUvar does not talk about such friends.
A nAlaDiyAr poem as a king of mountainous terrain: “ Who has the ability to understand another persons thoughts or what is in their hearts? After all people speak something; deed different from the spoken; to have friendship with such dubious characters, one must fear.
“Is it not painful to have a friendships that are different
in their words spoken, but deeds’re deceitfully indifferent?”
