எனைத்தும் குறுகுதல் ஓம்பல் மனைக்கெழீஇ
மன்றில் பழிப்பார் தொடர்பு.
(குறள் 820: தீநட்பு அதிகாரம்)
எனைத்தும் – சிறிதாகிலும்
குறுகுதல் – தன்னை அணுகுவதை
ஓம்பல் – விலக்குக
மனைக் – வீட்டிலே
கெழீஇ – நட்பாடி இருந்துவிட்டு
மன்றில் – பலர் கூடியுள்ள அவையிலே
பழிப்பார் – தூற்றிப் பழிக்கின்றவருடைய
தொடர்பு – தொடர்பினை.
வீட்டிலே காணும்போது நட்புறவாடுவதுபோல் நடித்து, பல்லோர் இருக்கும் அவையிலே தூற்றிப் பழிப்பவரை சிறிதளவுகூட நம்மை அணுகாமல் காத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும், என்கிறது இக்குறள். சிலர் நம்மை நாமிருக்கும் இடத்திலே காணும்போதும், அவருடன் தனிமையில் இருக்கும்போது மிகுந்த நட்புறவில் இருப்பதாகக் காட்டி நம்மை நெகிழ வைப்பர். அவர்களை பலர் இருக்கும் சபையில் பார்க்கும் போது, நம்மை சிறுமைப் படுத்தி, கேலிசெய்து, தூற்றுவதைச் செய்து நம்மை நகைப்புக்குரியவர்களாக ஆக்கிவிடுவர். அத்தகையோரை சிறிதளவும் நம்மை அணுக விடக்கூடாது. அவர்கள் நண்பர்கள் என்பதைவிட நம்பிக்கையை சிதைப்பவர்கள் என்றே கொள்ளவேண்டும்.
Transliteration:
Enaiththum kuRugudal Ombal manaikkezhIi
manRil pazhippAr thoDarbu
Enaiththum – even a little bit
kuRugudal – of closeness to selef
Ombal – must be avoided for
Manaik – those who at home
kezhIi – act as if a friend
manRil – but in public assemblies
pazhippAr – redicule and speak demeaningly
thoDarbu – their association.
We must not entertain the friendship of people of devious nature, even a tiny bit, when we know they act very friendly, while meeting at home, yet place us demeaningly in an assembly in the presence of others, says this verse. This verse is very relevant to ways of the world. We often see people that exhibit great friendship in person, but would treat us like dirt, redicule and make us a subject of others laughter. More than calling them as friends, they are to be taken as destroyers of faith in friendship.

who in person are friednly, but redicule in public assembly”
