83: (Façade Friendship – கூடாநட்பு)
[This chapter is about identifying façade friendship that is nothing but a charade. Regardless of how truthfully one extends his hand in friendship, there are people that look only for their benefit and would be friendly only till their needs are met with. Some of them can be seen by their overt and covert acts, their words; Sometimes it becomes imperative to reflect their friendship to safeguard ourselves and be politically savvy to keep such friendships at arms length and even to get our work done without impediments because of such false friends]

சீரிடம் காணின் எறிதற்குப் பட்டடை
நேரா நிரந்தவர் நட்பு.

சீரிடம் காணின் – தமக்களிக்கப்படும் இடம், அதனால் பெறுகின்ற ஆதாயமான துணை என்றிவற்றைப் பார்த்திருத்தல்
எறிதற்குப் – வெட்டுவதற்கு உதவும்
பட்டடை – அடைகல் (கொல்லன் பட்டறையில் உள்ள உலோகத்தை அடித்து வளைக்கும் கல்) அல்லது வெட்டுதற்கான அடிக்கல்
நேரா – உள்ளத்தால் நம்மை விரும்பாமல், கூடியிராது
நிரந்தவர் நட்பு – வெளியுலகில் நெருங்கிய நண்பரைப்போல் காட்டிக்கொள்ளுபவர் போன்றவரது நட்பு.
கூடா நட்பென்பது, வெளிப்பூச்சான நட்பைக்குறிக்கும். மேலெழுந்தாவாரியாக நட்புறவில் இருப்பதைப் போல காட்டிக்கொண்டு, உள்ளத்தில் அவ்வெண்ணம் சிறிதும் இல்லாத போலி நண்பர்கள் இருப்பர். அவர்களைப்பற்றிய அதிகாரத்தின் முதற்குறள், அவர்கள் எப்படிப்பட்டவர்கள் என்பதை, அவர்களைப் பட்டடைக் கல்லோடு ஒப்பிட்டுக் கூறி உணர்த்துகிறது. கொல்லன் இரும்பை அடித்து வளைக்கும் கல் அடைகல், அல்லது பட்டடைக் கல் எனப்படும். கொலைக்களத்து சிரத்தை வெட்டுங்கல்லும் அதே போன்றதே. இரண்டுமே நம்மை தாங்கும் சுமைதாங்கிக் கற்களாய் தோன்றினும், தக்கநேரத்தில் நம்மை துன்புறுத்துவனவே.
உள்ளத்தால் உண்மையான நட்பு கொள்ளாது, தமக்கு ஒருவரால் அளிக்கப்படும் இடம், அதனால் தாம் பெறுகிற ஆதாயமாகிய துணை என்பவற்றைப் பார்த்து, கொள்ளப்படும் போலி நட்பு, பட்டறையில் (கொல்லன் பட்டறையாயினும் சரி, கொலைக்களப் பட்டறையாயினும் சரி) உள்ள அடைகல் போன்றதாம். தாங்குவதற்கு என்று தோன்றினாலும், அவை நம்மை அடித்து வளைப்பவை அல்லது அறவே கொல்லுபவை.
Transliteration:
sIridam kANin eRidaRkup paTTaDai
nERA nirandhavar naTpu
sIridam kANin – only looking at the place given to self, and the benefits there in
eRidaRkup – to hit with the hammer or a sword (depending on metal or a head) (what is used!)
paTTaDai – anvil (a block with a hard surface on which another object is struck.)
nERA – truly not in friendship from their heart
nirandhavar naTpu – but showing a façade of a friendship for the eyes of the world
Façade friendship is an outwardly one, truly not from someone’s heart. In this first verse of the chapter, such false friends are compared to anvil, a hard surface or stone that is used to smash or strike another object on it. Such surface may be used in the workshops of ironsmith or where people are executed. The metaphor here is to show how hard hearted such false friendships are, though outwardly they may look like surface to bear us to relax.
Only looking at the status and the support it gives, if someone is friendly to another, then such friendship is pretense or travesty; pretend to be hugging, but holding a hidden dagger to kill at the opportune moment. Such friendships are like anvil stone, pretend to be supporting, but actually will be used to strike the object on it for destruction or deformation when the opportune moment presents, or when there is no use anymore.
