பகல்கருதிப் பற்றா செயினும் இகல்கருதி
இன்னாசெய் யாமை தலை.
(குறள் 852: இகல் அதிகாரம்)
பகல்கருதிப் – சிலர் பொருந்தக்கூடாது, பிரியவேண்டும் என்றும், பிடிவாதாமாக சேரக்கூடாது என்று எண்ணி
பற்றா செயினும் – வெறுக்கத்தக்கன செய்தாலும்
இகல்கருதி – அது மேலும் மேலும் வெறுத்தலயும், பகையே வளர்க்கும் என்பதை எண்ணி
இன்னா செய்யாமை – அவர்க்கு துன்பம் செய்ய எண்ணுதலை நாடாமையே
தலை – சிறந்த பண்பாம்.
சிலர் இணங்கிச் செல்லக்கூடாது என்று எண்ணி வெறுக்கத்தக்கன செய்தாலும், அது மேலும் மேலும் பகையே வளர்க்கும் என்று எண்ணி, அவர்க்கு மாற்றாக துன்பம் எண்ணாமல் இருப்பதே சிறந்த பண்பாம். ஒரு கண்ணுக்கு மறுகண் என்று பழி தீர்க்கும் படலத்திலேயே வாழ்ந்தால் உலகம் குருடாகித்தானே போகும்? இதையே இக்குறள் வாயிலாக உணர்த்துகிறார். இகலை இகல வேண்டும்
Transliteration:
Pagalkarudi paRRA seyinum igalkarudi
innAsei yAmai thalai
Pagalkarudi – Desiring to be separated and discarding companionship
paRRA seyinum – even if a person does deeds undesirable
igalkarudi – knowing that responding to such posture sameway would only grow hostility
innA seiyAmai – not doing counter with evil deeds is
thalai – the best solution ( to quell the hatred of the person, slowly, but in the long run)
Even if somebody, desiring to defriend and separate do hostile and despicable deeds, not thinking evil and painful things in return for that person is the best one can do. An eye for an eye, will make the entire world blind after all, could be the underlying thought for this verse; More than fostering friendships, discarding hostility and hatred is an important aspect of human relationships. Even if in disagreement, it is best to leave without indulging in counter evil for somebody that does not desire friendship.
