நோவற்க நொந்தது அறியார்க்கு மேவற்க
மென்மை பகைவர் அகத்து.
(குறள் 877: பகைத்திறந்தெரிதல் அதிகாரம்)
நோவற்க – பிறறிடம் முறையீடு செய்து, உளைச்சலைச் சொல்லி, நொந்துகொள்ள வேண்டாம்
நொந்தது – தாம் துன்பமுறுதலை
அறியார்க்கு – தாம் துன்பத்திலிருக்கிறோம் என்று அறியாதவர்க்கு (நண்பராக இருப்பினும்)
மேவற்க – வெளிக்காட்டிக் கொள்ளாக்கூடாது
மென்மை – தம்முடைய வலியின்மையை
பகைவர் அகத்து – பகைவர் உள்ளத்துணரும்படியாக.
தாம் துன்பமுற்றதால் ஏற்பட்ட மன உளைச்சலை ஒருவரிடமும் சொல்லி நொந்துகொள்ளக் கூடாது, குறிப்பாக நண்பர்களிடம் கூட! அதேபோன்று தாம் வலிமையற்று இருக்கிறோம் என்பதையும், யார் அறிந்தாலும், அறியாவிட்டாலும், குறிப்பாக பகைவர்கள் உணர்ந்துகொள்ளும்படி வெளிக்காட்டிக் கொள்ளக்கூடாது.
பொதுவாக எல்லா உரைகளும், அறியார்க்கு என்பதை “நண்பர்களுக்கு” என்றே சொல்லுகின்றன. ஆனால் பொதுவாக, தம் இன்பத்தைப் பலரோடு பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளுதலும், துன்பத்தை தனியாகக் கொள்ளுதலும் மேலோர் செயல். நண்பருக்கு தம் துன்பத்தைச் சொல்லி, அவர்களை வருந்தச் செய்யக்கூடாது என்பது மேல்வருவித்துக் கொள்ளப்படும் பொருள். அதேபோன்று, ஒருவன் தம்முடைய வலியின்மையை, பொதுவாக யாருமே அறியாமல் பார்த்துக்கொள்ளுதல் நன்று, அதிலும் குறிப்பாக பகைவர்கள் அறியாதவாறு பார்த்துக்கொள்ளுதல் இன்றியமையாதது.
Transliteration:
nOvaRka nondhadhu aRiyArkku mEvaRka
menmai pagaivar agaththu
nOvaRka – never complain to others
nondhadhu – about the hardships faced
aRiyArkku – in general to anyone, especially to friends
mEvaRka – never manifest or expose
menmai – the weaknesses of self
pagaivar agaththu – especially to the enemies
One shall not express or complain to others, particularly to friends about the hardships faced by him. Likewise, one shall not expose his lack of strength to others, more specifically to enenmies, says this verse.
Most commentaries have extended the meaning of the word “aRiyArkku” as “friends that don’t know”. It is true that it is a great virtue of great people that they share all their pleasures with others, and suffer their pains alone. Especially pains shall not be made known to the people that we must care for, the friends. So, the “friends angle” is a surmised one. Similarly, the area of weakness is something personal, that one may seek counsel from friends and with those who care, but certainly not let know the enemies.

Likewise never manifest weaknesses especially to foes, in general to none”
