பேணாது பெண்விழைவான் ஆக்கம் பெரியதோர்
நாணாக நாணுத் தரும்.
(குறள் 902: பெண்வழிச்சேறல் அதிகாரம்)
பேணாது – ஆக்கம் தேடுதலும், தேடியதைக் காத்தாலும் செய்யாமல்
பெண் விழைவான் – பெண் முயக்கத்தையே வேண்டியிருப்போர்
ஆக்கம் – தம்முடைய செல்வமே
பெரியதோர் நாணாக – பெருமளவில் வெட்கும்படியான
நாணுத் தரும் – வெட்கக்கேட்டினைத் தரும்.
ஆக்கம் தேடுதலும், தேடியதைக் காத்தலும் செய்யாது, பெண்ணணுக்கத்தையே விரும்பிருப்போர் தம் செல்வமே அவருக்கு வெட்கும்படியான தலைக்குனிவைத் தரும் என்கிறது இக்குறள்.
இதற்கான உரையாசிரியர்கள் பெரும்பாலோருடைய உரை குழப்பமே! பேணாது ஆக்கம் என்று கொள்வதால், தேடிவைத்தை செல்வத்தைப் போணாது என்றும், மேலும் செல்வம் தேடுவழியினைப் பேணாது என்றும் பொருள் கொள்வதே சரியாக உள்ளது. அச்செல்வம் எவ்வாறு பெரிய அளவில் வெட்கக்கேட்டினைத் தரும்? பெண்ணின்பத்திலேயே செல்வத்தைக் கரைப்பவனது செல்வம் அவனுடைய மாணழித்து, பெரும் வெட்கக்கேட்டினைத்தானே தரும். அதனாலேயே வரும் வெட்கக்கேடும் பேணாத ஆக்கத்தினால் வந்தது என்று கொள்ளலாம்.
Transliteration:
pENADu peNvizhaivAn Akkam periyadOr
nANAga nANuth tharum
pENADu – Without earning and preserving wealth
peN vizhaivAn – if a person is in the pursuit of women and the pleasure there in
Akkam – his wealth
periyadOr nANAga – to be greatly disgraced
nANuth tharum – will bring disgrace
Without earning wealth or in deeds to preserve the earned wealth, if a person spends his time and wealth in pursuit of pleasure of women’s company, only great disgrace will befall.
Most commentaries for this verse are a bit confusing and amply show the confusion of the commentators too. The word “pENAdu” and “Akkam” must be taken to gether to mean what the first paragraph here says. How then, wealth can bring disgrace? The wealth possessed by the person who does not attempt to preserve or grow, would diminish because of his pursuits of women. Such wealth is an instrument to disgrace and hence becomes the reason for disgrace too.
