கையறி யாமை உடைத்தே பொருள்கொடுத்து
மெய்யறி யாமை கொளல்.
(குறள் 925: கள்ளுண்ணாமை அதிகாரம்)
கை அறியாமை உடைத்தே – பயன் அறியாது, செயலறுதலும் அதனால் துன்பம் அடைதலும் கொள்வதாம்
பொருள் கொடுத்து – விலை கொடுத்து
மெய்யறியாமை கொளல் – தம்முடைய உடலையும், புலனுணர்வையும் இழந்து கொள்ளுதல் போலாம்.
தம்முடைய நிலையையும், குடிப்பதால் தமக்கு விளையும் இன்னல்களையும் அறியாதவர்கள், விலைகொடுத்து, குடிப்பதால் தம்முடைய உடலையும், புலனுணர்வையும் இழந்து கொள்ளல் போன்றாம். சொலவடையில் புழங்கும், “சொந்த காசில் சூனியம் வைத்துக்கொள்ளுதல்” போலாம்.
இக் குறளில் “கையறியாமை” என்பது “கையாறாமை” என்று இருந்திருக்கலாமோ என்றும் தோன்றுகிறது. கையறுதல் என்பது, கலக்கத்தையும் துன்பத்தையும் குறிக்கும் சொல். “கை” என்பது கரத்தால் செய்யக்கூடிய செயலையும் குறிப்பதாகும் ஆகையால், “செய்வதறியாமை” என்னும் “கையாலாகத்தன்மையை” இச்சொல் குறிப்பதாகவும் கொள்ளலாம். “குடி குடியைக்கெடுப்பதற்கு” ஏதுவாகிய, உடலுரத்தை இழக்கச்செய்தலையும் இச்சொல் குறிப்பதாகும்.
Transliteration:
kaiyaRi yAmai uDaiththE poruLkoDuththu
meyyaRi yAmai koLal.
kaiyaRiyAmai uDaiththE– without knowing the use, losing the ability to be useful, subjecting self to misery
poruL koDuththu – paying a price (for such misery)
meyyaRiyAmai koLal – losing the awareness about the body and the self
Not understanding what distress it would eventually place self, only fools would buy and drink toddy to lose awareness about their body and senses. As exists in common phrase usage, it is like “buying black-magic for self with own money”.
The word “kaiyaRiyAmai” could have probably been “kaiyaRAmai” which means distress and ensuing pain. On the other hand, “kai” also implies all that is done with hands and hence “kaiyaRiyAmai” would mean, “not knowing what to do” or inability to do anything useful. It can also indirectly mean toddy’s ability to make one lose the physical strength and be incapacitated.
