துஞ்சினார் செத்தாரின் வேறல்லர் எஞ்ஞான்றும்
நஞ்சுண்பார் கள்ளுண் பவர்.
(குறள் 926: கள்ளுண்ணாமை அதிகாரம்)
துஞ்சினார் – உறங்குபவர்
செத்தாரின் – இறந்தவரின்
வேறல்லர் – வேறு என கூற முடியாது.
எஞ்ஞான்றும் – அதேபோல் எப்போதும்
நஞ்சுண்பார் – விடத்தை உண்பவர்களே ஆவார்கள்
கள்ளுண்பவர் – கள்ளினை அருந்துபவர்கள்.
“செத்தாரை துஞ்சினார்” என்கிறது தொல்காப்பியம். உறங்கும் நிலையென்பது உணர்வுகள் இல்லாத நிலை, இறந்த நிலைக்குச் சமம். இரண்டு நிலையிலும் வெளியில் என்ன நடக்கிறது என்று ஒருவருக்குத் தெரியாது. அதேபோலாம் கள்ளை உண்ணுதலும், நஞ்சை அருந்துவதற்குச் சமம். இரண்டுமே ஒருவரை உணர்வுகள் இல்லாத நிலைக்கே அழைத்துச் செல்லும். மெதுவாக, ஆயினும் உறுதியாக, இறுதியாக வாழ்வையே அழிக்கக்கூடியது.
நஞ்சில் இருவகை உண்டு. ஒன்று உடன் கொல்லும். இன்னொன்று மெதுவாகவே கொல்லும் தன்மையது. ஆக இரண்டுமே இறுதியில் கொல்லக்கூடியனதான். செத்தவர் விழிக்க வியலாது, தூங்கியவர் விழித்தாலும். அதேபோலே கள்ளுண்பவர் சுயநினைவுக்கு வரலாம், நஞ்சுண்டவர் வராமல் நீள் துயிலுக்குச் சென்றாலும். ஆனால் உடனிருந்தே கொல்லுமாம் நோய்போன்றதே கள்ளுண்ணலும்.
ஒரு நிலையில் இந்த ஒப்புமை சரியெனப்பட்டாலும், தூங்குதல் ஓய்வெடுத்தலே; விழிக்கும் போது உடல் புத்துணர்வு பெறுவதே இயற்கை அளித்திருக்கும் நியதி, வரம். கள்ளுண்ணல்லையும் அவ்வாறே கொள்வோரும் உள்ளனர், எனினும், கள்ளென்பது ஒருவரை மதிமயக்குறச் செய்வது, எனவே இரண்டையும் ஒப்பு நோக்க முடியாது. உவமையில் ஒரு தெளிவில்லாமை இருப்பதாகவே தெரிகிறது.
Transliteration:
thunjinAr seththArin vERellar enjnjAnRum
nanjuNbAr kaLLuN bavar
thunjinAr – One who is sleeping
seththArin – dead person
vERellar – is not different ( from dead person )
enjnjAnRum – likewise, always
nanjuNbAr – those who consume poison are similar to
kaLLuNbavar – those who consume toddy.
TholkAppiyam refers to a dead person with the word “thunjinAr”, a person of sleeping state. Sleeping is a state without any awareness of what is happening around, similar to death. Similarly, drinking toddy is compared to taking poison. Both will take a person to a state devoid of being in senses. Though slowly sometimes, will definitely, in the end, lead a person to his ruin.
There are two kinds of poisons, deadly that kills right away; and slow that acts over a long time and kills eventually. The underlying truth is that both kill. Like a person in sleep-state, a toddy drinker may come back to senses, unlike a person that consumes poison; But its addiction will sure lead a person to permanently incapacitated death is what is perhaps implied.
Though the comparison in this verse is seemingly right, sleeping is for resting the body to be rejuvenated; such is the nature and its gift. Toddy drinkers would also argue similarly; But its ill-effects of making one lose senses is not equal to being rejuvenated; The metaphorical comparisons of this verse, somehow don’t seem to make sense, in someways.
“Sleep and death are similar, a state of being unaware
Toddy and Poison are similar that bring death, beware”
