உள்ளொற்றி உள்ளூர் நகப்படுவர் எஞ்ஞான்றும்
கள்ளொற்றிக் கண்சாய் பவர்
(குறள் 927: கள்ளுண்ணாமை அதிகாரம்)
உள் ஒற்றி – அவர் ஒளித்துச் செய்வதை உய்த்துணர்ந்து
உள்ளூர் – ஊராரால்
நகப்படுவர்– நகைக்கப்படுவர்
எஞ்ஞான்றும் – எப்போதுமே
கள் ஒற்றிக் – கள்ளை ஊருக்குத் தெரியாமல் ஒளித்து அருந்துவதாக நினைத்து
கண் சாய்பவர்– கள்ளுண்டு தளர்ந்து, மயங்கியிருப்பவர்.
கள் குடிப்பவர்கள், தாம் ஊருக்குத் தெரியாமல் ஒளித்து அருந்துவதாக நினைத்துக் குடித்தாலும், கள்ளுண்ட மயக்கத்தில் தளர்ந்து, மயங்கியிருப்பர். அதை உய்த்துணர்ந்து ஊராரால் எள்ளி நகையாடப்படுவர். இக்குறள் கள்ளுண்பவரகள் ஒளித்தே குடித்தாலும் அவர்கள் சுயவயமின்றி தள்ளாடித் தம்முடைய நிலையைத் தாமே காட்டிக்கொடுத்துவிடுவர் என்றும் அதனாலேயே நகைப்புக்கும் உரியவராகிவிடுவர் என்கிறது.
Transliteration:
uLLoRRi uLLUr nagappaDuvar enjAnRum
kaLLORRik kaNsAi pavar
uLL oRRi – spying and knowing that they do in hiding,
uLLUr – by the people of the town
nagappaDuvar – will be laughed at
enjAnRum – always
kaL ORRik – those who think they drink toddy in hiding
kaN sAipavar – and drink toddy and lose their sense of awareness (always)
Habitual toddy drinkers, may think that they are secretively drinking unknown to the people of the town; but they would lose their sense of awareness and appropriate behavior because of their intoxication and reveal their state to everyone. Their secrets will be detected by the townsmen easily and they will be laughed at for their inappropriate behavior, says this verse.
“Though thinks, his toddy drinking is secretive unknown to townsmen
his intoxicated inappropriate state would reveal, and he be made fun”
