அகடாரார் அல்லல் உழப்பர்சூ தென்னும்
முகடியான் மூடப்பட் டார்.

அகடு அரார் – தம் வயிற்று பசி ஆராத அளவுக்கு வறுமையுறும்
அல்லல் உழப்பர் – துன்பங்களுக்காட்பட்டு உழலுவர்
சூதென்னும் – சூதாம் கவறு ஆட்டாமாகிய
முகடியான் – திருமகளின் தமக்கையாம் தரித்திரத்து நாயகியாம் தவ்வையால்
மூடப்பட்டார் – ஈர்க்கப்பட்டவர், அரவணைக்கப்பட்டவர்.
கவறு ஆட்டமாகிய சூதிலே ஈர்க்கப்பட்டவர்கள் தரித்திரத்துக்கு ஆட்படுத்தும் திருமகளின் தமக்கையாம் தவ்வையாளின் கோரப்பிடிக்கு ஆட்பட்டவர்கள்; தங்கள் வயிறானது ஆறுமளவுக்கு உண்ணுவதற்குமியலாத துன்பச் சுழலில் அகப்பட்டு தத்தளிப்பவர்கள்.
“எண் சாண் உடம்புக்கு வயிறே பிரதானம்” என்ற சொல்வழக்கு ஒன்றுண்டு. அவ்வயிறு ஆராமல் இருப்பதே வறுமையில் உச்சக்கட்ட கொடுமை. வயிறு ஆராதிருக்கும்போது மற்ற புலன் நுகர்ச்சிகளும் இராதாகையால் வயிறு ஆராமையை முன்னிருத்திப் புனையப்பட்ட குறள். தவிரவும் செல்வத்தை திருமகளும், அழிக்கும் வறுமையை திருமகளின் தமக்கையாம் முகடியும் தருவதால், வறுமையால் சூழப்படுவதை, தவ்வையின் பிடிக்காட்படுவதை வைத்து கூறுகிறார் வள்ளுவர்.
Transliteration:
agaDArAr allal uzhapparchU dennum
mugaDiyAn mUDappaT TAr
agaD(u) ArAr – In extreme poverty to go hungry
allal uzhappar – will suffer extreme misery
chUdennum – the ill of gamble
mugaDiyAn – symbolized by the elder sister of goddess of wealth known as “MugaDi”
mUDappaTTAr – caught by her iron tight grip.
Caught by the iron tight grip of goodess (known as mugaDi) of the abject poverty, an indulgent in the evil of gamble, will suffer the immeaurable misery and starvation.
Hunger is the extreme stage of poverty. When hungry, pleasure of other senses will not be in a person’s mind. The evil of gamble is likened to the despised sister of wealth-goddess, whose grip shall hinder the vision of otherwise sane person to indulge in gambliing to lose everything they have.

a person suffers misery of hunger and loss of all property”
