நகைஈகை இன்சொல் இகழாமை நான்கும்
வகையென்ப வாய்மைக் குடிக்கு.
(குறள் 953: குடிமை அதிகாரம்)
நகை – புன்சிரிப்போடு கூடிய முகம்
ஈகை – கொடைத்தன்மை கொண்ட உள்ளம்
இன்சொல் – இனிமையான பேசுகின்ற பண்பு
இகழாமை – யாரையும் தூற்றா இயல்பு
நான்கும் – என்ற நான்கும்
வகையென்ப – இயல்பிலேயே உரியனவாம்
வாய்மைக் – உண்மையாக , மாறாத
குடிக்கு – நற்குடி தோன்றினார்க்கு
நற்குடிப் பிறந்தோரைக் காணுதல் எங்கனம்? எவரிடம் புன்சிரிப்போடு கூடிய முகமும், இனிமையாக பேசும் பண்பும், வரியோர்க்கு உதவும் கொடையுள்ளமும், எவரையும் தூற்றிச் சொல்லாத இயல்பும் உளவோ, அவரே மாறாத நற்பண்புகள் நிறைந்த குடியிலே பிறந்தவர்.
முகத்தில் நகையும், அகத்தில் பகையும் கொள்வதும். கொட்டிக் கொடுக்கும் கொடையுள்ளம் இருப்பினும், தேள்போல கொட்டும் குணம் இருப்பதும், பிறரை இகழ்ந்து பேசுதலும் இருப்பின் அவர் நற்குடிப் பிறந்தார் அல்லரல்லவா?
இக்குறளையொட்டிய நாலடியார் பாடலொன்று, நல்லார் கூட்டுறவு, இன்சொல்லுடைமை, வறியார்க்கு ஒன்று ஈதல், ஏனை மனத் தூய்மைஎன இந் நற்பண்புகளெல்லாம் உயர்குடிப் பிறந்தாரிடமே அமைந்திருக்கின்றன, என்கிறது.
இனநன்மை இன்சொல்ஒன் றீதல்மற் றேனை
மனநன்மை என்றிவை யெல்லாம் – கனமணி
முத்தோ டிமைக்கு முழங்குவரித் தண்சேர்ப்ப!
இற்பிறந்தார் கண்ணே யுள.
Transliteration:
nagaiIgai insol igazhAmai nAngum
vagaiyenba vAimaik kuDikku
nagai – cheerful demeanor and smile
Igai – benevolence
insol – sweet words
igazhAmai – not speaking ill of anyone
nAngum – these four traits
vagaiyenba – are in nature as their innate qualities
vAimaik – truly
kuDikku – high noble born
How to find and identify people of noble birth? Persons with pleasing smile and cheerful demeanor, sweet spoken, benevolent and not speaking ill of any, are truly people of noble birth says this verse.
Smile in face but vile in heart, giving nature, but harsh posture cannot be noble born after all. Good company, being sweet spoken, giving to poor, and purity at heart are the good traits of noble-born, says a verse in nAlaDiyAr, reflecting the content of this verse.
Cheerful face, benevolent, sweet words, and not reproaching,
The four are the traits in nature of truly noble born, unflinching”
