அடுக்கிய கோடி பெறினும் குடிப்பிறந்தார்
குன்றுவ செய்தல் இலர்.
(குறள் 954: குடிமை அதிகாரம்)
அடுக்கிய – மட்டற்று குவித்து வைக்கப்பட்ட
கோடி பெறினும் – செல்வத்தினை அடைந்தாலும்
குடிப்பிறந்தார் – நல்ல குடியில் பிறந்தவர்கள்
குன்றுவ – கட்டுபாடு அற்று ஒழுக்கம் குன்றுவதாய செயல்களைச்
செய்தல் இலர் – செய்யமாட்டார்.
நல்ல குடிப்பிறப்பாளர், அவருக்கு குவித்து வைக்குமளவுக்கும் பெரும் செல்வமே அடைந்தாலும், தம் குடிக்கு உகந்த செயல்களேயன்றி ஒழுக்கம் குறைவானச் செயல்களைச் செய்யார்.
ஒழுக்கம் உடைமை அதிகாரத்தில், இதே கருத்தை வேறுவிதமாகச் சொல்லியிருப்பார் வள்ளுவர், “ஒழுக்கம் உடைமை குடிமை இழுக்கம் இழிந்த பிறப்பாய் விடும்” என்று.
Transliteration:
aDukkiya kOTi peRinum kuDippiRandAr
kunRuva seydal ilar
aDukkiya – piled to the hilt
kOTi peRinum – even if wealth is obtained
kuDippiRandAr – people of great pedigree, lineage, nobility
kunRuva – that which diminishes their stature or degrading to their good conduct
seydal ilar – will never do.
People of good lineage, pedigree, though get wealth that is upto the hilt, will never indulge in anything that is degrading to their stature and noble birth.
In the chapter of good conduct earlier, we have seen vaLLuvar express the same differently, through the verse. “ozhukkam uDaimai kuDimai, izhukkam izhinda piRappAi viDum” – Being of impeccable conduct is nobility. Not being so, implies the low birth and pedigree.
“Even if bestowed with wealth piled to the hilt
Nobility doesn’t drift from good conduct and wilt”
