தலையின் இழிந்த மயிரனையர் மாந்தர்
நிலையின் இழிந்தக் கடை.
(குறள் 964: மானம் அதிகாரம்)
தலையின் இழிந்த – தலையிலிருந்து உதிர்ந்த
மயிரனையர் – மயிர் அல்லது முடிக்கு நிகராவர்
மாந்தர் – நற்குடிப் பிறந்தோர்
நிலையின் – தம் குடிப்பிறப்பின் கூறான மானம் மிக்க நிலையிலிருந்து
இழிந்தக் கடை. – தாழ்ந்து விட்டவர்.
பரமசிவன் கழுத்து பாம்பைப் போன்றதே, ஒருவரது மயிரும். அது தலையில் இருக்கும் வரைதான் அழகு, அதனால் பெருமையெல்லாம். அது உதிர்ந்து கீழே விழுந்தபின் அதையாரும் எடுத்து போற்றி, இது அரசனுடைய மயிர், பெரிய ஞானியுடைய மயிர், அல்லது நற்குடிப் பிறந்தோனுடையது என்று வைத்துக்கொள்வதில்லை. அதேபோன்றுதான் நற்குடிப் பிறந்தோரும். அவர்கள் மானம் இழந்து தாழும்போது, அவர்களை ஒருவரும் மதிக்கப்போவதில்லை.
இதனால் நற்குடிப்பிறப்பினரை என்பது மயிருக்கு நிகர் என்பதில்லை. மயிருக்கும் அது அழகாக, மதிக்கப்படுகிற நிலையென்று ஒன்று உண்டு என்பதை எடுத்துக்கூறி, அதோடு மானமிக்க நற்குடிப் பிறப்பை ஒப்பு நோக்கியுள்ளார் வள்ளுவர்.
Transliteration:
Thalaiyin izhinda mayiranaiyar mAnadar
Nilaiyin izhinda kaDai.
Thalaiyin izhinda – that fell from the head
mayir– the hair
anaiyar mAnadar – like that hair are people of nobility
Nilaiyin – from their elevated status of honor and dignity
izhinda kaDai – if they fall by their acts and deeds.
A persons’ hair is like the snake around Shiva’s neck. As long as it where it is supposed to be (for the snake, Shivas’ neck and for the hair, head), it is construed to add to beauty of a person. Once it is shaven or falls, none celebrates that as a saint’s hair or, kings’ hair, or the hair of nobility. Likewise, when the nobility or anyone loses their honor and dignity, the fall in their respect too and none will care for them.
The intent of the verse is not to equal the nobility to hair in a derogatory sense. Even hair has its respect if it is in the right place, the head and as long as it there. It is good to see that hair is not used in derogatory context by vaLLuvar completely.
Like the fallen hair loses it status of being decoration,
Is the status of nobility, fallen in honor, a degradation”
