மேலிருந்தும் மேலல்லார் மேலல்லர் கீழிருந்தும்
கீழல்லார் கீழல் லவர்.
(குறள் 973: பெருமை அதிகாரம்)
மேலிருந்தும் – உயர்ந்த பதவிகளிலும், இடங்களிலும் இருந்தும்
மேலல்லார் – மேன்மையானவர்களாக ஆகமாட்டார்
மேலல்லர் – சிறந்த பண்புகளாலும், செயற்கறிய செயலகளையும் செய்து உயர்வடையாதவர்
கீழிருந்தும் – வாழ்வில் தாழ்வான நிலையில் இருப்பினும்
கீழல்லார் – உயர்ந்தவர்களே
கீழல்லவர் – பண்பாலுல், செயல்களாலும் கீழானவற்றைச் செய்து தாழாதவர்
நற்பண்புகளே இல்லாது, செயற்கரியனவும் செய்யாது வாழ்வோர், உயர்ந்த இடங்களில் இருந்தும், பதவிகளை வகித்தும், உயர்ந்தோராகக் கருதப்படார். அதேபோல், வாழ்வில் கீழ் நிலையில் இருப்பினும், உயர்ந்த பண்புகளைக் கொண்டு, செயற்கரியனவற்றைச் செய்பவர், கீழோர் என்றும், இழிந்தோர் என்றும் ஆகார்.
ஏற்றமும், இழிவும் குடிப்பிறப்பால் மட்டுமன்று; கொண்ட பண்புகளாலும், செய்யும் செயல்களாலும் ஆகும். பெருமை எது, அல்ல என்று இரண்டையும் எளிதாகச் சொல்லும் குறள்.
Transliteration:
mElirundum mElallAr mElallar kIzhirundum
kIzhallAr kIzhal lavar
mElirundum – though of higher position
mElallAr – people of no virtues or accomplishments are
mElallar – not truly high in stature
kIzhirundum – though live poorly, with few opportunities
kIzhallAr – people of high values and virtues and accomplish
kIzhallavar – are not lowly in esteem.
Either by birth or sheer luck or other devious ways, if a person gets to higher position without virtuous conduct and true accomplishments, they would not be considered to be high in stature. Likewise, though not blessed with higher life of birth or wealth, people of high virtues and accomplishments, are not placed lowly; they are truly of high stature.
Stature or lack of it is not because of birth; they are by inculcated virtues and accomplishments as a true sign of greatness or glory.
“Though placed high, with no values or no virtues there is no true high stature
Likewise, though of lowly birth, high souls of great esteem have glory in nature”
