ஊழி பெயரினும் தாம்பெயரார் சான்றாண்மைக்கு
ஆழி எனப்படு வார்.
(குறள் 989: சான்றாண்மை அதிகாரம்)
ஊழி பெயரினும் – உலகே அழியும்படியான ஊழி வரினும்
தாம் பெயரார் – தாம் தம்முடைய இயல்பிலிருந்து சற்றும் மாறாதார்
சான்றாண்மைக்கு – சால்புடைமைக்கு
ஆழி எனப் படுவார் – சாகரம் போன்று ஆன்று, அகழ்ந்தோர் ஆவார்
ஊழிப் பிரளயமே தோன்றி உலகையே புரட்டிப் போட்டாலும், சான்றாண்மையில் சற்றும் மாறாதவர் சால்புடைமையில் கரை காணமுடியாமல் ஆழ்ந்து, அகன்ற சாகரம் போல்வர், என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர் இக்குறளில்.
“பழங்குடி பண்பில் தலைபிரிதல் அன்று” என்று ஏற்கனவே குடிமை அதிகாரத்தில் வள்ளுவர் கூறியிருக்கிறார் அல்லவா?
“சான்றோர் கடன்நிலை குன்றலும் இலர்” என்று நற்றிணைப் பாடல் வரியொன்று கூறுவதும், “தோல் வற்றிச் சாயினும் சாகன்றாண்மை குன்றாமை” என்று திரிகடுகப் பாடல் கூறுவதும் இத்தகையோரைப் பற்றிதான்.
Transliteration:
Uzhi peyarinum thAmpeyarAr sAnRANmaikku
Azhi enappaDu vAr
Uzhi peyarinum – Even if the destructive end of world happens
thAmpeyarAr – they will not change
sAnRANmaikku – in their virtue of excellence or sublimity
Azhi enap paDuvAr – are known as deep and vast ocean without shores
Even if the destructive storm, as if to cause the end of world, happens, the people of excellence will not change in their virtue, whose sublimity is shoreless and unfathomable ocean – says vaLLuvar.
vaLLuvar has already said it similarly in the chapter of “Noble lineage” that people of high birth and excellence shall not wean or deter in their virtues.
Once again lines of poetry in many literary works such as nARRinAI, thirikaDugam and puRapporuL venpA mAlai all say similarly.
“Even if the destructive storm happens for the world to end
People of excellence shall not deter in sublimity they defend”
