அணிஅன்றோ நாணுடைமை சான்றோர்க்கு அஃதின்றேல்
பிணிஅன்றோ பீடு நடை.

அணி அன்றோ – பெருமையுடன் அணியக்கூடிய அணிகலன் அன்றோ?
நாணுடைமை – பழி பாவங்களுக்கு வெட்கும் பண்பு
சான்றோர்க்கு – சால்புடை பெரியோர்க்கு
அஃதின்றேல் – அப்பண்பு இல்லாது ஒழியும்போது
பிணி அன்றோ – நோய் போலன்றோ
பீடு நடை. – மாண் உயர்ந்தார் போல் பெருமிதமான நடை?
பழி பாவங்களுக்கு வெட்கப்படுகின்ற பண்பு, சான்றோர்க்குப் பெருமையுடன் அணியக்கூடிய அணிகலன் போன்றது அன்றோ? அப்பண்பு இல்லாது ஒழியுமிடத்து, மாண்பு மிக்கார்போல் பெருமித நடை போடுவது ஒரு நோயே அன்றோ? என்று வியந்து வினவுகிறார் வள்ளுவர், இக்குறளில்.
Transliteration:
aNianRO nANuDaimai sAnROrkku ahdindREl
piNianRO pIDu naDai
aNi anRO – is it not an ornament
nANuDaimai – to have the sense of shame?
sAnROrkku – for men of dignity
ahdindREl – if that trait is not there
piNi anRO – is it not like a disease
pIDu naDai – to have a gait as if a nobility?
Is it not a prideful ornament or a jewel for men of dignity to have the sense of shame for undesirable acts? Likewise, when that trait is not there, is it not a detestable disease to have the gait as if from nobility? – asks vaLLuvar in this verse, thus glorying the sense of shame as a prime virtue and lack of it as a disease.
“Is it not an like an ornament to have the sense of shame as a trait?
Is it also not a disease not to have it and walk with a prideful gait?
