நாண்வேலி கொள்ளாது மன்னோ வியன்ஞாலம்
பேணலர் மேலா யவர்.
(குறள் 1016: நாணுடைமை அதிகாரம்)
நாண் – பழி பாவங்களுக்கு வெட்குகின்ற பண்பாகிய
வேலி கொள்ளாது மன்னோ – வேலி அல்லது அரணை தம்மைச் சுற்றி அமைத்துக்கொள்ளாது
வியன்ஞாலம் – பரந்த இவ்வுலகம்
பேணலர் – விரும்ப மாட்டார்
மேலாயவர் – உயர்ந்த பண்புகளை உடையவர்
பழிபாவங்களுக்கு அஞ்சுதலாகிய நாணுடைமையை வேலியாகக் கொண்டால் அல்லது, பரந்த இவ்வுலகத்தையும் விரும்பமாட்டார் உயர்ந்த குணங்களை உடைய மேலோர். பரந்த உலகத்தையும் விட என்றதால், அதன் மதிப்பையும், நாணுடைமையே அதைவிடவும் மிகவும் மதிக்கப்படுகிற ஒன்றாகவும் சொல்லப்படுகிறது.
Transliteration:
nANvEli koLLAdu mannO viyannjAlam
pENalar mElA yavar.
nAN – The virtue of shying away from the sinful and blameful
vEli koLLAdu mannO – not having that fence/hedge as the protection to safeguard
viyan njAlam – even if the entire world is theirs
pENalar – they would not desire
mElAyavar – people of great stature, nature
But for the defensive hedge of shyness to blame and sin, even if the expansive world is theirs, people of great nature and staure would not desire that, says this verse. Since the expansive world is mentioned in comparison, the worth of that is implied and compared with the hedge against the blame and sin; implied meaning is that the hedge is more worthy than the world itself.
“People of great nature and stature would prefer the hedge
Of shyness for sin and shameful instead of upto earths’ edge”
