இற்பிறந்தார் கண்ணேயும் இன்மை இளிவந்த
சொற்பிறக்கும் சோர்வு தரும்.
(குறள் 1044: நல்குரவு அதிகாரம்)
இற்பிறந்தார் கண்ணேயும் – நல்ல குடியின்கண் பிறந்தவர்க்கும்
இன்மை – வறுமையானது
இளிவந்த – இழிவு தருகின்ற தீய
சொற்பிறக்கும் – சொற்கள் அவர் வாயில் பிறப்பதற்கு உண்டான
சோர்வு தரும் – தளர்ச்சியைத் தந்துவிடும்
இல்லாமையாம் வறுமையானது, தீச்சொற்களைப் பேசும் பழக்கம் இல்லாத நற்குடிப் பிறந்தாரிடத்தும் இழிந்து இரக்கும் சொற்கள் பிறப்பதற்கு ஏதுவான தளர்ச்சியை உண்டு பண்ணிவிடும்.
ஔவையார் நல்வழிப் பாடலில் பத்து சிறந்த குணங்களைச் சுட்டி, ஏழ்மையும், அதன் காரணமாகப் பசியும் வந்திட நற்குடிப் பிறப்பாளராயிருப்பினும் அவையெல்லாம் நில்லாமல் பறந்துவிடும் என்கிறார். இப்பத்துப் பண்புகளும் அழிதலாலே ஒருவரிடமிருந்து இழிசொற்களால் இரந்து வேண்டுதலும் பிறக்கின்றன. ஈயென இரத்தல் இழிது என்று முன்பே படித்திருக்கிறோம். இனி, அப்பாடலானது:
மானம் குலம் கல்வி வண்மை அறிவுடைம
தானம் தவம் உயர்ச்சி தாளாண்மை – தேனின்
கசிவந்த சொல்லியர் மேல் காமுறுதல் பத்தும்
பசிவந்திடப் பறந்து போம்.
Transliteration:
iRpiRandAr kaNNEyum inmai iLivanda
soRpiRakkum sOrvu tharum
iRpiRandAr kaNNEyum – Even for those that were born in good lineage
inmai – being in the abject poverty
iLivanda – demeaning and unpalatable (words, perhaps begging)
soRpiRakkum – to be born from those that are from good lineage,
sOrvu tharum – will let them lose their resolve.
The abject poverty, will make even the people of noble lineage to utter demeaning words of begging, says this verse. AuvayyAr in her work of “nal vazhi”, lists ten good virtues; they are: honour and respect, good lineage or birth, education, caring, wisdom, giving, penance, high status, effort, desire for girls of sweet words. When a person dwells in severe poverty, he lets go of the above and even prepared to stoop down to beg letting go pride and the glory of lineage, which serves the premise for this verse.
