தொல்வரவும் தோலும் கெடுக்கும் தொகையாக
நல்குரவு என்னும் நசை.
(குறள் 1043: நல்குரவு அதிகாரம்)
தொல்வரவும் – தொன்மைவாய்ந்த குடிப்பிறப்பதுவும்
தோலும் – அதன்கண் வரும் புகழையும்
கெடுக்கும் – கெடுத்துவிடும்
தொகையாக – ஒருங்கே
நல்குரவு என்னும் – வறுமை, அல்லது ஏழ்மை என்பது (தூண்டுகிற)
நசை – தவறான ஆசை
தொன்மையான சிறந்த குடிப்பிறப்பதுவும், அதனால் வரும் புகழும் ஒருங்கே கெடும், ஏழ்மை, அது தரும் வளமின்மை இவைத் தவறாக தூண்டும் ஆசையினால். ஏனெனில் இன்மை என்பது திருடவும், பிறை பொருளுக்கு ஆசைப் படுதலையும் தூண்டுமென்பது பொதுவாக உணரப்படுவது. “பசி வந்திட பத்தும் பறந்துபோகும்” என்ற சொலவடை நன்கு அறியப்பட்ட ஒன்றே.
இன்மையைப்பற்றி நாலடியார் பாடலொன்று இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது. பாய்ந்து ஒலிக்கின்ற அருவிநீர் கற்களின் மேற்புறத்தைக் கழுவுகின்ற கூட்டமான மலைகளையுடைய சிறந்த நாடனே! உலகத்தில் வறுமை பொருந்தியவர்க்கு அவர் பிறந்த குலத்தின் பெருமை கெடும்; அவருடைய பேராற்றல் கெடும்; எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேலான அவர்தம் கல்வி நிலையுங் கெடும். இனி அப்பாடலானது.
பிறந்த குலமாயும்; பேராண்மை மாயும்
சிறந்ததங் கல்வியும் மாயும் – கறங்கருவி
கன்மேற் கழூஉங் கணமலை நன்னாட!
இன்மை தழுவப்பட் டார்க்கு
நான்மணிக்கடிகை பாடல் வரியும், “நலனும் இளமையும் நல்குரவின் கீழ் சாம்” என்று கூறுகிறது.
மணிமேகலை காப்பியத்தில், பாத்திரம் பெற்ற காதையில், கூறப்படும் வரிகளும் இதே கருத்தையே அழகாகக் கூறுகின்றன.
“குடிப்பிறப் பழிக்கும் விழுப்பம் கொல்லும்
பிடித்த கல்விப் பெரும்புணை விடூஉம்
நாண் அணி களையும் மாண் எழில் சிதைக்கும்
பூண் முலை மாதரொடு புறங்கடை நிறுத்தும்
பசிப்பிணி என்னும் பாவி…”
Transliteration:
Tholvaravum thOlum keDukkum thogaiyAga
Nalguravu ennum nasai
Tholvaravum – Birth in a great lineage
thOlum – the pride and glory that it brings
keDukkum – will be ruined
thogaiyAga – together
Nalguravu ennum – the poverty that is known
Nasai – as importunate desire that can induce wrongful ways to acquire wealth
The glory of lineage and the fame that comes out of that, together will ruin, because of poverty and the wrongful, importunate desire it gives in a person. Poverty can induce someone to steal, covet others belongings. After all a popular adage that, “when the hunger strikes, all the good traits will disappear” is know so well.
A nAlaDiyAr poem says the same that people of abject poverty will ruin the pride of their lineage; their great abilities will ruin; and the educational qualifications will also lose merit. Similarly convey the works of nAnmaNikkaDigai and maNimEkalai.
“The pride of great lineage and the glory associated together
will ruin, when the poverty-induced wrongful desire smother”
