இன்பம் ஒருவற்கு இரத்தல் இரந்தவை
துன்பம் உறாஅ வரின்.
(குறள் 1052: இரவு அதிகாரம்)
இன்பம் ஒருவற்கு – இன்பத்தை ஒருவர்க்கு தருவதாம்
இரத்தல் – பிறரிடம் இரந்து ஒன்றைப் பெறுதல் (எப்போது?)
இரந்தவை – அவ்வாறு இரந்து வேண்டுபவை
துன்பம் உறாஅ வரின்.- ஒரு துன்பமும் இல்லாமல் வருமாயின்.
ஒருவரிடம் யாசிக்கும் ஒருவருக்கு அவ்வாறு யாசிப்பதும் இன்பமாவது எப்போது? எப்போது யாசிக்கப்படுபவற்கு அதன்கண் துன்பம் இல்லையோ, அப்போதுதான்! இரத்தல் என்பது பொதுவாக இழிது எனினும், அது, ஈவாருக்கு மகிழ்வைத் தரும்போது, இழிவாகாது என்று கண்டோம்.
மகிழ்வு இருக்கிறதோ அன்றி இல்லையோ, ஒருவர் இரப்பதால், ஈகைப் பண்பு கொண்ட ஒருவருக்குத் துன்பம் வருமேயானால், இரப்பது இழிவேயாம். வறுமையால் உயிர் நீங்குதலைவிட இழிவு இலா இரத்தலே மேல் என்பது முதலிரண்டு குறள்களால் நிறுவப்படுகிறது.
Transliteration:
Inbam oruvaRku iraththal irandavai
Thunbam uRAa varin
Inbam oruvaRku – it gives pleasure to someone
iraththal – to ask alms and get (when? And how?)
irandavai – when alms so recieved
Thunbam uRAa varin – come without any difficulty or pain for the giver.
When does seeking alms from someone is pleasurable to the sought? When the sought does not have any difficulty or pain because of that seeking. Though it is demeaning to seek alms for someone, if it gives pleasure to the givers, then it is after all not demeaning as it gives an opportunity to gain glory to the giver.
Though it is not pleasurable, if it causse pain to the sought, then seeking alms is definitely demeaning to the seeker. This and the previous verses establishe that better than losing life because of poverty (as seen in the verses previous chapter), it much better to seek alms to sustain life.
“It is indeed a pleasure to the seeker, when
the sought does not have to endure any pain”
