அச்சமே கீழ்களது ஆசாரம் எச்சம்
அவாவுண்டேல் உண்டாம் சிறிது.
(குறள் 1075: கயமை அதிகாரம்)
அச்சமே – தண்டிக்கப்படுவோம் என்கிற பயமே
கீழ்களது – கீழ்மக்களாம் கயவரது (கீழ்களது என்றதால் அஃறிணையாகவே கூறிவிட்டார்)
ஆசாரம் – ஒழுக்க வழக்கங்கள் எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் காரணம்
எச்சம் – இதற்கு மிஞ்சி அவர்களிடம் காணப்படும் ஆசாரத்துக்கும்
அவாவுண்டேல் – ஏதாவது ஒன்றை அடையும் காரணங்களால், பாசாங்குக்காவது
உண்டாம் சிறிது – ஓரளவுக்கும் ஒழுக்க வழக்கங்கள் சிறிதளவு இருக்கும்
கயவரை, அஃறிணையாக வள்ளுவர் கூறும் குறளிது. அவர்களை “கீழ்களது” என்றே குறிப்பிடுகிறார் வள்ளுவர் இக்குறளில். கயவர்களது ஒழுக்கமாகன வழக்கங்கள் எல்லாம், எங்கே தாம் தண்டிக்கப்பட்டு விடுவோமோ என்கிற ஒரு பயத்தினால்தான். ஒழுக்கம் விழுப்பம் தரும் என்கிற எண்ணத்தினால் அல்ல. பயத்தினால் அல்ல என்று கூறப்படும் ஒழுக்கக் கூறுகளும் கூட அவர் ஏதாவது இச்சை கொண்டு, அதை அடைய கடைபிடிக்கும் ஒழுக்கமாக இருக்குமே தவிர, உணர்ந்து ஒழுக்கங்களைக் கடைபிடிக்கமாட்டார்கள்.
Transliteration:
achchamE kIzhgaLadu AchAram echcham
avAvunDel uNDAm siRidu
achchamE – The fear of being punished
kIzhgaLadu – for the people of base nature
AchAram – for their façade virtuous demeanor
Echcham – Apart from that, if they are still found to be of virtuous demeanor
avAvunDel – that could be with ulterior motive out of desire to get something
uNDAm siRidu – that time of desire oriented demeanor is possible a little
In this verse vaLLuvar addresses the base people as lifeless objects by using the word “KizhgaLadu”. Only out of fear of punishment from higher authorities, the base would have apparent and perhaps façade virtuous demeanor; not because of righetousness. If there is still some trace of such virtuous demeanor, it could probably be due to ulterior motive of desiring something; otherwise base would not straigten them selves up and do the right thing.

Else as a façade to get something, cunningly”
