மலர்காணின் மையாத்தி நெஞ்சே இவள்கண்
பலர்காணும் பூவொக்கும் என்று.
(குறள் 1122: நலம்புனைந்துரைத்தல் அதிகாரம்)
மலர் காணின் – பூக்களாம், தாமரை, குவளை, போன்ற பூக்களைக் கண்டால்
மையாத்தி – மயங்குகிறாயே
நெஞ்சே – நெஞ்சமே
இவள் கண் – இவளுடைய கண்
பலர் காணும் – நான் மட்டுமே காண்பதாயினும் பலரும் காணுகின்ற
பூவொக்கும் என்று – பூக்களுக்கு இணையென்று
எந்தவொரு மலரைக்கண்டாலும் நான் மட்டுமே கண்டு மகிழ்ந்த என் காதல் கிழத்தியின் கண்களை, பல காணும் பூக்களுக்கு ஒப்பாக நினைத்து மயங்குகிறாயே நெஞ்சே! உள்ளமானாலும் உனது அறியாமையை அன்றோ நீ வெளிக்காட்டுகிறாய் என்று நெஞ்சினை கடிந்துகொள்வதாக ஒரு கற்பனை.
இந்த குறள் பல உரையாசிரியர்கள் கற்பனையைத் தூண்டியிருக்கிறது. பரிதியார் இவ்வாறு கூறுவார்: “நெஞ்சே நீ கண்டு மயங்கும் மலர்கள் என் காதலியின் கண்களைக் கண்டு நாணும்; ஏனெனில், அவளைப் போல் கண்களைப் பெற்று, அவள் பார்க்கும் காதல் பார்வையை அவை பார்க்க முடியாதே!”.
கண்களைப் பூக்களுக்கு ஒப்பாகக் கூறினாலும், அப்பூக்களுக்கு, இவள் கண்களின் ஈர்க்கும் தன்மை இல்லையே! எதற்காக மயங்குகிறாய் என்று நெஞ்சைக் கடிந்து கொள்வதாக அமைந்த குறள்.
Transliteration:
malarkANin maiyAtti nenjE ivaLkaN
palarkANum pUvokkum enRu
malar kANin – When you see flowers like lotus, lily
maiyAtti – confused you are!
nenjE – O! mind
ivaL kaN – My beautiful maidens’
palar kANum – like many others seeing
pUvokkum enRu – comparable to the flowers (seen by others)
How confused you are to compare the eyes of my lover-maiden, whose eyes, I alone am privy to, as if they are like the flowers seen by others, when ever you see a flower like lotus or lily! – a verse as if the man in love admonishing the mind – a nice imagination on the part of VaLLuvar.
This is one of the verses that has kindled the imagination of many commentators. ParidiyAr, interprets it differently as follows: “O mind! the flowers that you see and get confused would feel shy seeing my maidens’ eyes, because they might have the beauty but could not convey the desire expressed by her eyes!”
